Odds as at 9:00 pm UK Time on February 11th, 2024. Odds may now differ.
The second is the opponent. I don’t believe in blindly opposing players that may be fatigued. I’d like to have a competent opponent playing on their preferred surface. Wang checks those boxes, as a player with plenty of talent herself and who is clearly a hard courter above all else.
With the breakeven percentage here below 33%, I’m more than happy to have a go at backing the upset.

Beatriz Haddad Maia Recent Form
The tall Brazilian is coming off a strong week in the United Arab Emirates, reaching the semifinals and losing a long match to Daria Kasatkina.
That match, however, was her second that lasted over three hours for the event, and combined with her doubles play (she withdrew from that prior to her semifinal match), she spent over 13 hours on court.
That’s not new to her. In fact, she’s spent more time on court than anyone on the women’s tour, despite not playing as many matches as many of the top players
You have to wonder how sustainable Haddad Maia’s repeated marathon matches are.
In 2023, Maia spent a whopping 7,128 minutes on court during the tour; one of the lengthiest times on court recorded of the season, with 59 matches. It’s not surprising to me, though.

She has the ability to play front-foot tennis and serve with a bit of pace, but far too often she forgoes that for a more passive approach. That means she plays a lot of close matches (which in itself means being a big favourite might be the wrong price point).
We’ll see how she looks in her opening match on Monday, but I wouldn’t expect too much.
Xinyu Wang Recent Form
What a great opportunity for the world No. 41 to pick up a top-15 win.
Wang is just 5-5 this season, with three of those wins coming a few weeks ago in Hua Hin, but she has a strong game on hard courts that features a big first serve and attacking forehand that can put points away fairly quickly.
She’s been talked about for quite some time, but it’s the last year or so that we’ve seen glimpses of that potential starting to be realised.
She’s lost a few three setters in disappointing fashion recently, but I think we saw what she’s capable of in Thailand when she went to the semis and nearly forced a deciding set (she led by a pair of mini breaks in the second set tiebreak) against an absolutely redlining Diana Shnaider.
She does tend to be a bit erratic at times and it’s why the sustained success still hasn’t come, but I don’t mind backing players like that when they’re over 3.00 odds wise. If she was somewhere in the 2.25 range, this would be a different story.
Beatriz Haddad Maia vs Xinyu Wang H2H – Stat of the Match
Haddad Maia has won all three meetings in the past, but a few points to look over here.
For starters, those were all in 2022 or earlier. As I mentioned, we really started to see Wang progress in 2023, so I’m not sure that was the same player. Secondly, the third loss in late 2022 was a three setter. So as we saw Wang begin improving, she was able to push the Brazilian.
Third, each match is its own entity, and I don’t know that Haddad Maia entering this match can be expected to be in as good shape as she was entering the previous meetings, considering how much tennis she played last week in Abu Dhabi.
