We covered the decline of Bautista Agut in an article earlier in the season and that hasn’t shown any signs of turning around. Throw in the fact that his underpowered game isn’t suited all that well for Doha’s medium slow paced hard courts, and the fact that his preference is a quicker surface anyway, and you’ve got a recipe for a Fucsovics win in this contest.

Read on for more expert insights.

Marton Fucsovics Recent Form

It’s been a tough start for Fucsovics in 2024, but that is as much a byproduct of who he has been tasked with early on in tournaments as anything else.

He’s just 1-3 this year, but he’s drawn the upstart Matteo Arnaldi in the first round of his first tournament (he lost that by the slimmest of margins – in a third-set tiebreak), the red-hot Grigor Dimitrov in the first round of the Australian Open (where he played a very competitive match) and then against in the second round in Rotterdam.

With a decently well-rounded game (there are no clear weaknesses, but also no discernible weapons that make him stand out on a tennis court), he is often more competitive than markets anticipate against better players, while mostly beating those he should.

Form aside, the biggest thing working in Fucsovic’s favour is the matchup. Not only is he playing someone who is fading in the pace generation department from the baseline, but he’s also extremely athletic, moves well around the court and can last in long rallies from the baseline without making mistakes.

If one doesn’t have the power to hit through the courts and his defensive game, he’s not going to bail them out with a slew of unforced errors very often.

Roberto Bautista Agut Recent Form

Since his first two matches of the year against Fabian Marozsan and a seriously struggling Francisco Cerundolo, Bautista Agut has been mired in a 1-5 slump in his last six, with his lone win coming against a fellow ageing veteran who is losing his power in the form of Richard Gasquet.

As I mentioned earlier, the ability to generate pace has seemingly disappeared from his game, so unless he’s hitting with acute angles shot after shot – which leaves very little for room error on its own – the Spaniard has struggled to find ways to win points without opposition mistakes so far this year.

With his best days very likely in the rearview mirror and playing on courts that don’t suit his game all that well, I’m happy to oppose him here.

Marton Fucsovics vs Roberto Bautista Agut H2H – Stat of the Match

Bautista Agut does hold the 3-1 lead in matches between these two in the past. Now, with Bautista Agut not the player he was even at this stage of the season last year when he beat Fucsovics in an incredibly tight three-set match, I’m inclined to not really put much stock into his previous success in their encounters.

Even in those three wins he has, two came in three sets and the other came via retirement against an injured Fucsovics.
