Dominic Thiem vs Juan Pablo Varillas Best Bet: Friday, July 22nd

Well, Thursday’s selection from the ATP was going well, until from 6-3, 2-2* 15-30 with a window for the break Daniel Elahi Galan collapsed and ended up losing.

For Friday’s selection on the men’s tour, it’s to the Swiss alps in Gstaad, where a resurgent Dominic Thiem is into the quarterfinals for the second time in as many weeks and will look to make his first semifinal appearance since returning from a prolonged injury absence.

In his way, however, is Peruvian Juan Pablo Varillas, who’s taken to the elevated conditions well.

Let’s break this one down further!

In this article:

Dominic Thiem vs Juan Pablo Varillas Preview

Friday, July 22nd, 9:30 UK Time

There’s no doubt that at the top of his game, the Austrian is one of the most dominant players on tour when it comes to playing on the dirt.

Even at altitude, his big game, packed with pace and topspin, is an absolute nightmare for opponents.

At the moment, however, Thiem is still climbing back to his top form – and while there have been glimpses of it, he’s still lacking some dominance from the baseline.

He did an incredible job to fight back from 2-5 down against Federico Delbonis in his second-round match to win in straight sets, and he’ll need to replicate that to emerge victorious against Varillas.

The task may not be that simple, though. Varillas is in better form than his Austrian counterpart, is a better mover and – most importantly – doesn’t have the long, exaggerated backswings to his groundstrokes that Delbonis does. Playing at altitude with less time and the balls coming back at you much quicker, which can be crucial.

Varillas has also been serving extremely well this week. From his first round of qualifying through his second round in the main draw, Varillas has held 90% of the time on serve, with two of the four breaks he’s surrendered coming to an excellent returner in Roberto Bautista Agut.

Dominic Thiem vs Juan Pablo Varillas Best Bet

While it remains to be seen whether Thiem has enough in the tank to get through another match, it’s certainly good to see the former US Open champion and French Open finalist re-discovering some form.

With his opponent adapting well to the altitude, serving proficiently and possessing a strong weapon in his forehand, though, I certainly don’t think he runs away with this one by any means.

I’ll be looking to back both the over and underdog to win once again.
