Frances Tiafoe vs Ben Shelton Expert Tip
This. One. Should. Be. Fun!
What a matchup of supremely talented, incredibly athletic, charismatic Americans. Not only should there be fireworks on court with incredible tennis, but we should see a massive crowd that makes this match an absolute must-watch.
From a betting standpoint, I’m going to take the over here. We have two very strong servers, with neither being the most adept on return. That, however, is surely baked into the price point.
I think we’re also getting two players who have peaks and valleys within matches as well, making this more likely than not to be a lengthy affair. Whether that is four or five sets, I’m not sure, but the serve-oriented nature of the matchup and the overwhelming likelihood we get at least four sets has me intrigued by any number below 40.5.

Frances Tiafoe Recent Form
The recent form prior to the U.S. Open may not have been the best for Tiafoe, but he made clear in a recent on-court interview that the lead-in events are a distant memory for him, as it’s the U.S. Open that is what he cares about in the summer months.
He’s shown as much on court too. He dealt with a tricky Adrian Mannarino with aplomb in the third round and picked apart opponents you’d expect him to in Rinky Hijikata, Sebastian Ofner and Learner Tien in his other matches.
Tiafoe is locked in and looking to make a deep run in this tournament and his draw has helped him in that regard.
He’s a big favourite for a reason in this matchup against his younger compatriot. He should be able to rely on that serve and forehand combo along with his aggressive mindset and more solid game from the baseline to reach the semifinals where he may run into a certain Novak Djokovic.
Ben Shelton Recent Form
Still a relative newcomers to the tour, Shelton has built his ranking in a most unconventional way.
Almost all of his points come from two runs at the highest level of the sport at the Australian Open and now the U.S. Open, or from the lower-tier Challenger Tour, where he won back-to-back-to-back indoor hard court tournaments in the latter stages of the 2022 campaign.
He’s got a cannon of serve, monster forehand and incredible movement. The raw talent is there, and it’s simply up to him and his team to apply the polish.
If he can learn to construct points and plan them out, rather than playing more reactive tennis, he should take a giant leap forward. That, however, comes with time. For now, he plays highly entertaining matches, even though they tend to lack in the tactical department.
The serve and power alone (he’s hit several serves over the 140 miles per hour mark this week) though should assist him in keeping things close.
Frances Tiafoe vs Ben Shelton H2H – Stat of the Match
With Tiafoe being a staple of the main tour for the last several years, it’s no shock that the two Americans haven’t done battle on the professional circuit.
That said, I’m sure they’re both well aware of each other’s strengths and weaknesses and will be prepared for this encounter.
Statistically, it’s the serving numbers that stand out for these two. They’ve both held over 85% of their service games at tour level on hard courts over the last 52 weeks, they’ve both won over 75% of first serve points and each has also managed to back up the second delivery at a rate of over 53.5%. Those are all strong numbers.
This one should be a serve-oriented match, but the odd one that actually provides decent entertainment in the process!
