Dominic Stricker vs Pablo Llamas Ruiz (U.S. Open): Thursday, August 24th

Well, another big bet goes down from a dominant position. Not only did Aziz Dougaz lead by a set and a break against a player who had never played a hard-court match above the ITF level, but he did so after having lost nine total points on serve through eight service games! That should’ve never taken three sets to win.

For Thursday’s ATP preview, we’ll remain at the U.S. Open where the tennis continues to come fast and furious. Let’s delve into Dominic Stricker vs Pablo Llamas Ruiz.

In this article:

Dominic Stricker vs Pablo Llamas Ruiz Expert Tip

I’m going to side once again with the player that I trust more on hard courts and who has the more natural power game in this one.

Stricker has been on the radar of many in the tennis community for a while now and he hasn’t been a disappointment, amassing a few upsets on the ATP Tour, as well as five Challenger Tour titles in the last few years.

Llamas Ruiz had a nice week in Segovia on home soil the other week, but it’s worth noting that Segovia is played in altitude, where the Spaniard’s serve was assisted in a way that it won’t be in New York City.

I have him being much more vulnerable on serve in this one and am glad to back the Swiss on the handicap.

Dominic Stricker Recent Form

It feels like Stricker went through a bit of a hangover in terms of form after he qualified for Wimbledon and then won his first round match in the main draw.

Other than an impressive win on home soil at a Challenger tournament against fellow young gun Arthur Fils, the 21-year-old lost three in a row, including a pair of matches to players he really shouldn’t be losing to anymore.

That carried over in the opening round when he lost the opening set against a somewhat underpowered Alexis Galarneau. From there, he took over, losing just two games in the final two sets.

That’s what makes him so dangerous. He not only has the firepower to find relatively consistent holds, but he’s athletic enough to actually play adeptly on the return of serve.

That should serve him well against a more consistent Llamas Ruiz, who can be susceptible to pressure in his service games when not playing in the thinner air that helps his serve play up.

Pablo Llamas Ruiz Recent Form

Now the world No. 146 – a career high ranking for the Spaniard – Llamas Ruiz is having a career year.

Almost all of that success, however, has come on clay. The only hard-court run at the Challenger level was the aforementioned title run in Segovia, just outside the capital of Madrid.

While his serve has improved, his intelligent and consistent play from the baseline is still his calling card.

He did win his opening match in routine fashion, but he was a huge favourite and played Andrea Collarini – an Argentine who has now lost eight straight contests on the professional circuit.

Dominic Stricker vs Pablo Llamas Ruiz H2H – Stat of the Match

There’s no head-to-head to dissect between these two.

For me, it’s more about the career hard court records for each of the players. Considering they’ve both played primarily on the lower circuits, I want to focus on their Challenger Tour success on the surface.

Stricker has played about six times as many matches as his counterpart and while his win percentage isn’t as high, he’s still won two-thirds of his matches in a much larger sample size.

The familiarity with the surface, as well as the game that’s more well-suited for success, have me backing him to reach the final round of qualifying.
