Diego Schwartzman vs Luca van Assche Expert Tip
It’s been an absolutely miserable season for the Argentine, who has dropped out of the top-100 for the first time in a long while.
His backhand seemed to disappear early on and it still hasn’t fully come back to him. The diminutive pro was never a big hitter, so losing some of that stability and consistency left him with very little to trouble his opposition.
Schwartzman did find a few wins in qualifying draws at Masters events in the summer, but he has lost his last four matches overall. I will say, however, his play has looked better on court, even if the results are still lacking.
Most importantly, matchup wise he finally has a winnable one. During this swing on quicker courts, his game has still been underpowered and he’s played several players with the ability to put together easy service holds in Alexander Zverev, Alex Bolt, Arthur Rinderknech and Alexander Shevchenko.
Now he’s finally playing someone where his return prowess can come to the fore and I would expect him to win this more often than not, making him a favourite by my numbers.

Diego Schwartzman Recent Form
It hasn’t been pretty lately results-wise for the 31-year-old. I will say though, a three-set loss to the emerging Shevchenko is nothing to hang one’s head over, nor is taking Zverev to three sets. Keep in mind, Zverev has been playing at a top-10 level in 2023 since returning from injury.
His loss to Bolt was via retirement and Rinderknech and his first serve can be a tall task, especially when he lands nearly two thirds of them as he did in New York.
I actually think Schwartzman has looked a bit more confident on court and in quick conditions, he finds a bit more purchase on his shots.
Further, he has far more experience in fast conditions than the young van Assche, who hasn’t had the opportunity to play much against tour level competition on fast hard courts.
Luca van Assche Recent Form
Of all the players at the Challenger level that have been pushing their way onto the main circuit in 2023, van Assche has to be the one that takes most after Schwartzman himself.
As someone who looks to spread the ball around the entirety of the court, lacks real power and plays a more tactical and consistent game, he very well be the next Schwartzman in the coming years.
I’m not convinced that he takes down a player with more experience and who employs a similar style, but has done so for years at a much higher level.
He’ll have to be at the top of his game on serve and land his first serve early and often, while also placing those serves well to keep Schwartzman at bay in his service games.
Van Assche is coming from a decent run in Orleans, France where he made the semifinals on an indoor hard court, with some nice three-set victories before falling to Jack Draper.
Diego Schwartzman vs Luca van Assche H2H – Stat of the Match
This match should be pretty telling about whether or not Schwartzman is improving a bit as the season winds down.
He’s never played van Assche before, and now that he’s finally facing a serve he can consistently put in play, we’ll see if he can finally assert himself and look like the better player on court.
That would also do wonders for his confidence, and more importantly, allow him to collect 25 rankings points and keep him alive to try and pick up even more.
