Danielle Collins vs Elise Mertens Expert Tip
It’s been a strong recent few weeks for Collins, with the exception of a few run-ins with the dominant world No. 1 on the women’s side of things.
With her ball-striking capabilities, Mertens’ dip in form this year and her vulnerabilities against power players, I’m happy to back the volatile, but overpowering American.
It doesn’t hurt that Mertens struggled with someone much less established and with less power than Collins in the first round.

Danielle Collins Recent Form
The American with an absolutely ferocious game from the baseline has managed to quietly put together a rather impressive summer.
Outside of two losses to Iga Swiatek (one in lopsided fashion and another in three sets), Collins is now 7-0 in the trio of big events of the hard court summer (Montreal, Cincinnati and the U.S. Open).
She has some of the most raw power on her groundstrokes on tour, but does struggle with finding a Plan B if that power game can’t find the range.
That usually occurs against fellow power players or those that can keep her on the back foot, where trying to overhit results in a slew of errors.
With Mertens far from fitting that profile, I’d expect the 29-year-old to have enough time to set up her shots and blast through the Mertens defences.
Elise Mertens Recent Form
It hasn’t been a great 2023 for Mertens, and her first round win was her year in a microcosm.
Playing against Mirjam Bjorklund, the Belgian really struggled with the fact that the Swede could dictate play and really pull her on a string around the court from the forehand wing.
As much as Bjorklund has improved in 2023, she’s still not near the level of pedigree or power that Collins is.
I’ve been unconvinced this year by Mertens, didn’t have those concerns assuaged last round and I don’t like the matchup here for her in the least.
Danielle Collins vs Elise Mertesn Head to Head – Stat of the Match
With all the aforementioned points about the matchup, it shouldn’t come as a big surprise that Collins has a commanding lead in the head-to-head department.
The American leads 3-1, but with Mertens’ only victory coming on grass in 2018 – long before Collins had established herself as a WTA Tour regular – the more relevant matches have seen Collins go 3-0.
Those were all on hard courts and Collins won 6 of the 7 sets in those 3 matches.
With her playing some fine tennis and Mertens having taken a step back in recent times, I wouldn’t be surprised in the least to see more of the same.
