A lot of people will point to Martinez’s form on clay in recent times as a reason to like his chances in this match. I can understand the desire to back an underdog in good form on a surface, but I’d make the case that 1) it’s already baked into the price and 2) the actual play wasn’t as impressive as the win-loss record would imply.

Now he’s taking on someone with a stronger serve and a bit more offensive capabilities in Altmaier. I think we’re seeing a nice discount in backing the German thanks to a Challenger title last week for Martinez.

The other thing to consider is that winning a title the week prior means a lot of matchplay, which can lead to fatigue. Now, matches don’t equate to fatigue on their own, but when one considers that four of the five matches Martinez played went past the two hour mark, I do think that concern becomes a tad more prevalent.

Daniel Altmaier Recent Form

Outside of reaching the quarterfinals in Auckland (where he had to retire), it has been a tough start to 2024 for the German.

It’s likely why, despite having the much stronger game, he’s priced as a marginal favourite in this one. Other than stunning Alexander Zverev and beating French youngster Harold Mayot, Altmaier hasn’t won since that week in New Zealand.

Even still, he’s taking on someone who may get a lot of balls back into play, but shouldn’t really be able to press him or pull him around the court. He should be able to play on his terms for most of the proceedings, and his backhand shouldn’t be as vulnerable in this particular matchup.

With a better serve and more ways to finish points, Altmaier is set up well to end his losing skid and get back on track on his preferred surface.

Pedro Martinez Recent Form

Dropping back to the Challenger level a few times this year seems to have done wonders for the 26-year-old. He’s made a pair of finals at that level this year, winning one last week in Girona. His semifinal run in Santiago has also helped bolster his ranking.

The one qualm I still have with Martinez is that the actual tennis hasn’t been all that inspiring.

While he can extend points and avoid making mistakes, he lacks attack and doesn’t land the ball with enough depth often enough for me to believe that he’s going to be able to keep this run going against someone like Altmaier.

Even in Santiago, it was surprising to see him win given how he played against both Facundo Diaz Acosta and Arthur Fils. Perhaps he replicates that here, but with plenty of hours in his legs from a week ago and a middling offensive game, I don’t believe it’s as high as 50% that the markets would imply.

Daniel Altmaier vs Pedro Martinez H2H – Stat of the Match

Martinez did manage to win the lone match these two have played, three years ago in Kitzbuhel (though it was from a set down). A few key differences with this match though. For starters, Altmaier has improved his game and become much more consistent since that match.

The other thing is that Kitzbuhel is played at high elevation, meaning those who can keep the ball in play and hit with larger margins are rewarded. Plus, the thin air helps beef up mediocre serves. Those are things that would help Martinez.
