Odds as at 4:15 am UK Time on April 29th, 2024. Odds may now differ.

While it’s nice to see Auger Aliassime winning a few matches in back-to-back events, I’m not sold that he deserves to be the favourite against the strong young gun from the Czech Republic.

Not only have the wins come against some players who aren’t great in the conditions that were on offer, but they weren’t the most inspiring of victories either.

Taking on a player with an abundance of talent who can play across surfaces, I’m more inclined to believe that the Canadian will look as average as he has for the better part of the last year or so.

Felix Auger Aliassime Recent Form

The quarterfinals in Munich and now a third-round appearance in Madrid are the results that were needed for Auger Aliassime to secure some rankings points, with his ranking having dropped to the point where he no longer has a bye at Masters events or a seed at the grand slams.

Beating Yoshihito Nishioka (in three sets, no less) and Adrian Mannarino on the dirt means very little and having to come back against an out-of-form Maximilian Marterer from the brink of defeat is also a worrying result, even if he won the match.

On the court it’s not like he’s been playing at an elite level either, with errors still happening with too much frequency and him often looking like when he tries to play prolonged rallies he lacks a plan for closing out points.

The wins are a good sign, but the actual quality of play is still a concern.

Jakub Mensik Recent Form

Qualifying for the Australian Open and winning a match as a teenager was an impressive start to the campaign for Mensik, but it was just the beginning.

He’s also made a final in Doha and is now into the second week of a Masters event. It’s clear the market has respect for him too, making him the slightest of underdogs against an established tour level professional.

That said, I don’t know if he’s receiving enough respect.

He can match the explosive serve of Auger Aliassime but plays with more comfort on the clay. He also has bruising groundstrokes and the discrepancy between his forehand and backhand isn’t as large.

I’d say that despite his young age and relative lack of experience that he should be the favourite here.

Felix Auger Aliassime vs Jakub Mensik H2H – Stat of the Match

With it being Mensik’s first season on the main tour, it’s easy to see why these two have yet to play. I’m excited to see how a matchup between two strong servers and powerful hitters plays out in the altitude of Madrid.
