Another ATP preview for Thursday, as we look at our Arthur Fils vs Nuno Borges prediction. It’s a match that features a pair of players who had some strong weeks at the start of the season but could certainly use some form at the BNP Paribas Open. Borges’ win probability is only 46.5% while Fils is favoured to win at 1.78 odds. The handicap is one game and the total game line is 23.

I’ll give it one more loss with Fils before I decide to stop betting on him until he turns things around. Since his run to the semifinals in Auckland, there’s no doubt that he’s been pretty poor. Heading to South America to play early-season clay tennis appears to have done him absolutely no good.

The mistakes were flowing and he was even being hit off the court by a young gun in Brazil (now, Joao Fonseca is expected to be a top-10 player in a few years, so it’s not the worst loss, but still). That said, he’s playing a fairly underpowered player coming off a major grind of a loss himself in Mexico.

With Fils undoubtedly the player more likely to dictate and find cheap points behind a serve with enough power to cut through the gritty courts, I think he still deserves to be a larger favourite than we’re seeing in the market.

Read on for more expert insights.

Arthur Fils Recent Form

I’m not sure what is going on with Fils, but he’s far too talented to play the way he has since the second week of the season.

After a quarterfinal in Hong Kong and that semi in Auckland, he struggled with Jiri Vesely until the Czech tried out in Melbourne and has lost four of five matches since that. Now the long win against Thiago Seyboth Wild was a decent one, but losses to Pedro Martinez and Dusan Lajovic (given how that loss played out) simply aren’t good enough.

Fils still has a well-rounded game with imposing power that plays across surfaces, and his talent is still clear as day.

I believe in form impacting your valuations in the market as much as the next guy, but this is getting a little much. Borges has had a strong start to his season, but he’s cooled off a bit himself since Australia and simply can’t stick with Fils if the young Frenchman gets it going.

Nuno Borges Recent Form

The 27-year-old former NCAA player from Portugal was one of the biggest surprises down under at the Australian Open, when he made the second week of the event, beating Grigor Dimitrov as a 9.00 odds underdog.

He added a quarterfinal run in Los Cabos a few weeks ago as well, but other than that, he has looked as underpowered as one would expect at the top level of the game. Now, credit where it’s due. He has improved his first serve. It has looked much tougher to put in play this season than in the past. From the baseline, however, he still struggles to generate winners and he’s certainly susceptible to being pushed around by his opposition.

Arthur Fils vs Nuno Borges H2H – Stat of the Match

These two have split their previous two encounters, but Borges’ win came in 2021 on clay at an ITF tournament. Fils was just 17 years old at that point, and he still held his own, taking a set.

The other matchup? In Auckland back in January. Fils dropped just two games in a routine performance. Now, that is an unlikely outcome I wouldn’t expect to transpire again, but it does show just what Fils can do when in control of a match against a less powerful opponent.
