Anna Bondar vs Viktoriya Tomova Parma Ladies Open Expert Tip: Resurgent Bondar Too Good for Bulgarian Foe
Anna Bondar vs Viktoriya Tomova (Parma Ladies Open): Thursday, September 21st
Dominant win for Leylah Fernandez, who continues to be one of the best altitude hard courters on the women’s tour.
On top of the 1000-level event this week in Mexico, the WTA Tour has a clay tournament at the 125K level as well in Italy. For Thursday’s preview, I want to look at a matchup that feels really poorly priced from the Parma Ladies Open and preview Anna Bondar vs Viktoriya Tomova.

Anna Bondar vs Viktoriya Tomova Expert Tip
I feel like I’ve been backing more favourites than normal of late, but the undervaluation of some players in a part of the season that tends to have weaker fields has really surprised me.
This is another spot where I really like the favourite, with Bondar being in good form in the last few weeks, on her preferred surface and being the much more talented player when it comes to executing a more offensive brand of tennis.
- Expert Tip: Bondar -2.5 Games at 1.83 with Bet365, using 4/10 stakes.
Odds as at 12:00 am UK Time on September 21st, 2023. Odds may now differ.

Anna Bondar Recent Form
Back on clay late in the season at the 125K and higher ITF levels has done wonders for Bondar, who was surprisingly poor in 2023 for the most part before the last few weeks.
More natural on the red dirt, she’s shown precisely how she made her way up the rankings in the first place. In the name of being frank, she’s got far too much for the vast majority of players in these late-season clay 125K draws, and she’s shown just that having lost only nine games through four sets in Parma this week.
Now, Tomova is a better opponent than she’s seen in the previous two rounds, but she doesn’t really possess the firepower to actually win points of her own volition.
With topspin being more prevalent on clay courts, it’s clear why Bondar prefers the surface. She has a strong serve, can dictate with the forehand, but when put onto a hard court, she tends to net a lot of balls trying to flatten her forehand out. Without that hanging around her neck on clay, she possesses far more rally tolerance, which allows her offensive game to flourish as well.
Her 9-1 record since the U.S. Open illustrates the fact that she’s head and shoulders above many of these competitors. Tomova may have the ability to pull errors out of her opponent’s racquet, but if Bondar can avoid that, she’ll be in total control and should win this by a comfortable margin.
Viktoriya Tomova Recent Form
Considering her game and where Tomova had been ranked the last few years, I’d say working her way into the top-100 and winning a high-level ITF event, as well as a WTA 125K tournament should be classified as a success for the Bulgarian.
She won’t really blow you away with any kind of power on the court, but her work rate is incredible, she makes a lot of balls and won’t give away many free points. Needless to say, if her opponent is struggling to keep the ball in play, Tomova is going to have a pretty decent day.
The last little while hasn’t proven to be that fruitful for the 28-year-old though. Her wins have come primarily against other underpowered players and those with the capabilities to play more aggressive tennis – particularly on the forehand wing – have found plenty of success against her.
Ludmilla Samsonova, Katie Boulter, Olga Danilovic, Nadia Podoroska and Peyton Stearns can all dial it up on that side. That is also Bondar’s best shot. I don’t think she has the raw power of some of the names listed there, but she can certainly dictate with that forehand and she knows how to do so on clay really well.
Anna Bondar vs Viktoriya Tomova H2H – Stat of the Match
Tomova won the only match these two have played, with that match seven years ago. Tough to put much stock in that match as it pertains to the match we have on hand on Thursday.
Stats wise, it’s all about the ability to back up one’s serve on slower courts that I want to look at in this one. With clay lending itself to more breaks of serve, who is more likely to win points in bunches behind their serves and string together holds.
With less power and the stats showing Tomova barely wins half the points in her service games, while holding her serve just 52% of the time in the last 52 weeks on clay.
Bondar fares significantly better in both departments, winning nearly 60% of service points and 70% of service games at tour level on the dirt in the last year.
