It’s an odd day from a betting perspective in women’s tennis on Thursday. The vast majority of matches from Budapest, Palermo and Iasi have heavy favourites, making finding the value a tougher proposition. Either we look to an underdog who has an outside chance to pull off an upset that is greater than what the implied probabilities would indicate, or we try and find a favourite to back in another market that may not be accurate for whatever reason.
I’ve opted for the second of those options in backing Bogdan, as she takes on the Swiss veteran that is a long way from her best.
Perrin isn’t really a competitive player anymore, even at the ITF level. Against a top-50 player? It’s hard to construct a path to victory for the 32-year-old.
She doesn’t have any weapons from the baseline, a serve to rely on or real notable consistency. Being 32 and never known as the swiftest player around the court, her movement is also exploitable at this stage.
With the level of competition being a big step up (last round Elena Gabriela Ruse ended up playing through an injury that was clearly hampering her) from what she’s used to, I can’t see her keeping things close.

Now, the key here is that with such a mismatch comes rather lopsided odds.
Where I do think we can find a bet, however, is in targeting the total games played in the match. First, we know that far more often than not, the Romanian wins this one in straight sets. Then, if we take a look at the matches that Perrin has played on clay against higher-level competition of late, we can see she does have her fair share of lopsided sets lost.
Against the likes of top-100 talents Leylah Fernandez and Diane Parry, as well as young clay-court talent Sara Bejlek, Perrin won no sets and lost six, with those three contests averaging just over 15 games played.
I’ll happily back Bogdan to get this done in straightforward, dominant fashion against a poor Perrin.
