Alycia Parks vs Elena Gabriela Ruse (Transylvania Open): Tuesday, October 17th

Disappointing stuff on Friday from Greet Minnen, who began the match up 4-2* 15-40 with chances to go up a double break. From there, the Belgian fell apart on serve, finishing with her worst day behind her first serve since July.

Onto this week, where we have a trio of WTA events in Romania, China and Tunisia. Let’s head to the Transylvania Open for Tuesday’s preview in the Alycia Parks vs Elena Gabriela Ruse match.

Alycia Parks vs Elena Gabriela Ruse Expert Tip

Despite her run of poor form for most of the 2023 season, I’m happy to back Parks here for a few reasons.

First, it’s the post-U.S. Open indoor swing. That’s where she excels, because her game is so well suited to indoor conditions, and this part of the calendar tends to draw weaker fields, where her serve is enough to carry her through.

The other part is the matchup. Parks can not only match, but outhit the Romanian from the baseline, while she has a booming first serve that Ruse simply can’t match. Throw in a lack of play from Ruse and horrible showings against decent competition in the last few months and I can’t believe the market is so keen to bet on Ruse, even if she is on home soil.

  • Expert Tip: Parks to win at 1.63 with Unibet, using 3/10 stakes.

Alycia Parks Recent Form

Other than her qualifying run in and first round win in Montreal (along with a very close loss to Belinda Bencic), it’s been a really poor season for the American.

That’s a byproduct of her relatively inflated ranking allowing her to get into better tournaments, which leads to tougher opposition in first round matches. How did she manage to earn that inflated ranking? By dominating the competition at indoor events late in the 2022 campaign.

To me, that’s a sign that Parks is better than a lot of players out there, but isn’t anywhere near being ready to compete at the top of the game.

She has one of the most powerful first serves on the women’s tour, and pummels the ball on the forehand side, but her movement isn’t great, she commits too many errors, the backhand isn’t great and she’s far too content just hammering the ball and hoping for the best.

Luckily for her, she isn’t taking on a very imposing opponent here and matches up with her incredibly well.

Elena Gabriela Ruse Recent Form

Ruse is actually 6-2 in her last eight matches, but the quality of competition in those six wins has been less than stellar.

Outside of Dayana Yastremska, she has zero wins that would qualify as remotely impressive. Her two other matches against decent competition? Losses by five and seven game margins.

Not the greatest showings.

While Parks’ level is up for debate, she’s certainly much closer to Karolina Pliskova and Harriet Dart (the players who beat her in straight sets) than some of the ITF players she beat up on.

Alycia Parks vs Elena Gabriela Ruse H2H – Stat of the Match

No previous meetings between these two in the past to look to.

Stats wise, I’m not huge on looking at win percentages and just drawing conclusions based on that number alone – simply because quality of competition matters – but in this spot, I think it does illustrate the gap between these two in indoor settings.

Parks’ win percentage indoors at the pro level is over 10% higher than Ruse’s, and that’s a pretty notable number.
