Adrian Andreev vs Pierre Hugues Herbert Expert Tip
Odds as at 3:00 am UK Time on November 23rd, 2023. Odds may now differ.
Another somewhat puzzling price here, as I have Andreev as the favourite in this one. I don’t believe he’s overwhelmingly better, but to me, he’s certainly more likely to win this match against someone who has historically struggled on clay.
Herbert’s style isn’t the most compatible with the surface, he’s past his prime in terms of movement and athleticism, and he’s avoided clay as much as possible in the last several seasons.
Andreev may not be a clay expert, but he’s shown a few times this year he’s competent and should be afforded more respect.
Read on for more expert insights.
Adrian Andreev Recent Form
As ever with the mercurial 22-year-old, 2023 has been an up-and-down season for him with more struggles of late than success.
That said, he has been sneaky strong on clay courts this season, with three quarterfinal appearances (he looks for his fourth on Thursday in this match) on the dirt at this level to his name.
Despite an aggressive approach, he’s shown the ability to win matches against impressive French players like Hugo Gaston and Harold Mayot. Now, a lot of that success has come in Zug and Szekesfehervar, where conditions did play a bit quicker, but of the two players in this match, he’s by far the one that regresses less when things slow down on clay.
Andreev was also close to qualifying for the French Open, losing out in the final round in three sets to one of the biggest surprises of the opening week in Genaro Olivieri.
With his path through qualifying being more convincing and a close win over a crafty and consistent Oleksii Krutykh in the opening round of the main draw, he should be well-prepared for a fairly one-dimensional Herbert on Thursday.
Pierre Hugues Herbert Recent Form
To summarise Herbert and his lack of enthusiasm for clay courts in the most succinct way possible, consider this: The Frenchman has won just six matches on the dirt since the beginning of last season.
Half of those have been this week in Valencia, where he beat a relative no-name in qualifying, before having to come back from 0-6 down to reach the main draw and then from down a set once more against Corentin Moutet.
He may have three wins under his belt at this event himself, but he’s done plenty to avoid playing on the surface where possible for a few years now and isn’t well-suited for sea-level, clay-court tennis.
Herbert’s primary weapon is his serve and his serve-and-volley tactic is a throwback to an older generation of tennis that is seldom used anywhere these days, much less on clay courts, where there is far more time to set up and hit passing shots.
He was never that fleet of foot either, let alone at 32 years old, and that means another component of his game that is typically important on clay is lacking as well.
Adrian Andreev vs Pierre Hugues Herbert H2H – Stat of the Match
This is the first meeting between the two pros ranked outside the top 200 at the moment.
Statistically, Andreev does have a better clay-court hold plus break percentage over the last year on the Challenger Tour. He also has a much better dominance ratio, which measures how much pressure you’re able to apply on serve versus how much pressure you typically face in your own service games.
This is where Herbert’s reduced effectiveness on serve really comes into play, as his ability on return doesn’t gain nearly enough of an edge to offset that reduced effectiveness.
