Adam Walton vs Patrick Kypson (Atlantic Tire Championships): Thursday, September 14th

Well, the rain delay only prolonged the inevitable, as Adam Walton won 10 of the final 12 games from 3-5 down in the match to pick up the win from Tuesday’s preview, while Christian Langmo put in a workmanlike performance to cover the -2.5 games nicely (as I said, that should’ve been 3.5 or 4 games, and it finishes on 4). Nice double-up on the wins for us from the Challenger level.

Let’s look to continue that success down at the ATP Challenger Tour on Thursday, as we preview Adam Walton vs Patrick Kypson from the Atlantic Tire Championships in Cary.

Adam Walton vs Patrick Kypson Expert Tip

Going back to the well backing Walton again this week. I still think there’s a slight undervaluation on him in the betting markets.

I’m still fine with backing him on serve and I do think he’s a bit more solid and well-rounded from the baseline.

Kypson has had a nice season, but a lot of his success has been a byproduct of his scheduling and being smart with tournaments he’s entered, maximising his chances to accumulate points.

Read on for more expert insights.

Adam Walton Recent Form

The Aussie continues to impress for the most part, especially here in Cary, where he’s now won six straight matches dating back to last month when he won the title.

Whether it’s the environment, the competition or the courts, there is something the former NCAA player clearly enjoys about this stop on the Challenger Tour.

Equipped with a strong enough serve and a fairly strong baseline game that can both stick around in longer exchanges and dictate play, particularly in his own service games. I don’t think he’s going to blow anyone away, and I’d be surprised if he made a serious push at becoming a main tour regular, but he’s certainly a more than capable Challenger level kind of player.

Patrick Kypson Recent Form

The 23-year-old American is an interesting case.

A few years ago, I thought his play was a long way off from being ready for the Challenger Tour and didn’t know if he’d make it to this point.

I think he’s certainly cleaned up some of his weaknesses in that time, and his serve is certainly strong enough to carry him against some of the weaker competition at this level.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that his success this season has come on clay in altitude, where his service is even more potent and he has the time from the baseline thanks to the slower, higher bouncing surface to set his shots up.

Those also tend to be played in Central and South America, where the fields don’t have as many strong players and deeper runs (and thus rankings points) are far more achievable.

He shouldn’t have a problem either keeping pace with, or even outpacing Walton on serve, but the question will be if he can control the baseline and avoid sloppy play. I’m not so convinced in that part of his game and that’s a big part of the reason I’m opposing him here.

Adam Walton vs Patrick Kypson – Stat of the Match

No meeting at the professional level between Walton and Kypson.

Stats-wise, I think the records this season are fairly indicative of where these guys would prefer to play. Kypson has over double the wins on clay in 2023 as he does on hard courts, despite having posted more losses on hard courts than the dirt.

Walton on the other hand has played almost exclusively on hard courts this year.

Whether Kypson is just more comfortable on the clay or that’s a function of him hunting ranking points, he’s clearly finding more victories on the slower courts where he has more time from the baseline.

Odds as at 4:00 am UK Time on September 14th, 2023. Odds may now differ.
