The UFC Featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski will attempt to make his 5th title defence in a row this Saturday night at UFC 290. He is coming off a decision loss for the Lightweight title against Islam Makhachev in February at UFC 284.
This was just the 2nd loss in his MMA career, with the first one coming way back in 2013 when he was starting out in Australia. He is 9-1 over his last 10 fights and he has taken down some huge names during this run like Max Halloway, the Korean Zombie, Brian Ortega, and Jose Aldo.
Alexander Volkanovski has steadily been improving his game over the last few years and has looked better with each fight. At 34 years of age, he still has a few years left at the top. His striking has gotten much sharper and more precise, and his striking defence has been outstanding, only absorbing 3.40 strikes per minute whilst landing 6.35.
Since winning the first-ever TUF Latin America series 9 years ago, Yair Rodriguez has slowly been climbing the Featherweight rankings with his incredible performances. It seems that any fight with his name on it has the potential to win Fight of the Night, with his showmanship and athleticism.
Rodriguez won the interim Featherweight title back in February against division gatekeeper Josh Emmett and is now poised to unify the two belts and become the undisputed champion. His kicks are lethal and his boxing is solid, but most importantly he is very creative and difficult to predict.
He boasts 12 career KO/TKO victories and his elbow KO against the Korean Zombie was a thing of beauty. That said, his takedown defence leaves a lot to be desired and he will be at a disadvantage in the grappling department.

Volkanovski is quite a big favourite here at 1.25 odds at Bet365 and I wouldn’t blame you if you took Rodriguez at 4.00, or 4.20 at William Hill. However, if we look at the way these two match up, the most likely outcome would be a victory for the champ.
Volkanovski is much more experienced, he is great at adjusting to his opponent’s style and he has a brick head, almost impossible to knock out. He will have a big advantage in the grappling department and changing levels will be much easier for him due to his height.
Rodriguez is a phenomenal striker and to be honest, he is scary. But I just don’t think it’s his time yet to claim the title of UFC Featherweight champion as long as Volkanovski is in his prime.
We expect to see Volkanovski hold up in the striking department, land 3-4 takedowns and earn the nod from the judges with some ground & pound.
