This match features two teams who are likely headed for the playoffs, as the Avalanche are only three points behind Dallas for the Central Division lead while the Knights are on top of the Pacific Division table with a narrow two-point lead over the LA Kings.

Let’s talk about the struggles for the Knights on the road lately, as they have lost 7 of their last 10 away matches. On the positive side of things, the Knights did take points in 6 of those games and they have gone into overtime in their last three skates. An overtime loss to struggling Chicago came after quite a run of solid results. Since that 5-game win streak, a loss to Chicago, and a loss to Dallas last time out have softened their cushion on the Division standings.

In case you haven’t looked at the entire Western Conference table of late, this race is so wide open it is amazing. There are eight teams separated by 6 points, but those top-8 teams are all starting to pull away from the pack. It will just be a matter of placement and a strong finish to the campaign to see who lands where for the post-season.

We’re not there yet, but to get there the Avalanche are in their best form right now and they are taking points seemingly every night lately. In fact, over the Avalanche’s last 17 games, they have earned at least a point in 15 of those affairs.

Over this current 5-game win streak, the Avs are beating teams that are also battling for a post-season berth, taking wins over Edmonton, Minnesota, Winnipeg, and Calgary along with a comfy win over struggling St. Louis.

Nate MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen are putting up ridiculous numbers this season, and to think that Nate missed 11 games and still leading the team with 70 points is amazing. MacKinnon’s next dime will be his 50th of the campaign, and lending a helping hand is always good to keep everyone around you better.

MacKinnon has scored a goal in 6 of the Avs last 7 games while carrying a 7-game point streak into tonight’s affair at home. Colorado will play 4 straight games against teams in playoff positions at the moment, and they are already kicking ass in these situations. I think Colorado is looking forward to getting back on the ice while the Knights are reeling from a shootout loss to Dallas.

Momentum is everything, and the Avalanche has it right now so we ride it out until it stops.
