First, let me apologize for the loss on Monday as the Penguins fell short in the first period against Anaheim on Monday. So, let’s get that tip back tonight with a play on this total between Le Flame and the Avalanche.
This is the second of three meetings between the two teams in the regular season as the Avalanche fell to Calgary in this building on October 13 when the campaign was just getting underway. Le Flame dumped 5 goals on Giorgiev converting a pair of power-play goals while outshooting the Avs 27 – 25.
As we look at the standings in the Western Conference, the Avs are currently outside of the playoff picture with only 47 points. With 51 points, Le Flame is in fifth place in the Pacific Division currently holding on to the 8th seed, but we are still a good distance away from the post-season.
The Avalanche are getting in a scoring groove having found 13 goals over their last two games each producing wins to try to keep pace with the herd. Colorado will be on the road for three straight games this week, as they’ll play Seattle and Vancouver on back-to-back nights this coming Friday and Saturday. Since returning to the lineup after a stint on the injury list, Nate MacKinnon has contributed 5 goals and 8 assists over the last 8 games, including a brace against Detroit this past Monday night. It took some time for MacKinnon to get acclimated to the lineup as the Avs lost 5 of his first 6 games since December 31, but it looks like things are flying in the right direction again now. MacKinnon has missed 11 games but still is second on the team in scoring with 47 points.
Le Flame will be home for the next 4 games, and I will assume that Nazim Kadri will be looking forward to going up against his old team again, Kadri spent the last 3 years with the Avs, and he sits third on the Flames roster with 35 points (17G & 18A). Elias Lindholm only has 40 points leading the Flames who are ranked 3rd in the NHL putting up 35 shots a night.
Lindholm is only averaging 1.8 shots a game, yet he leads this Flames team in scoring, taking quality over quantity. After being held off the scoresheet in the 2 – 1 loss to Nashville last time out, I expect Lindholm and the first line to produce some scoring again tonight.
Calgary Flames vs Colorado Avalanche Best Bet
This total is only 6, and the line at +100 gives us about even money on our return. That is okay with me, especially after watching them dump 6 goals on Detroit on Monday alone. I expect this to be a 3- 3 affair and overtime might be needed to decide who takes that second point from the match. I would love to call for both teams to go to OT because of all of the value that comes with the offer, but I think this total is still worth the best bet of the night.
