Saturday’s Horse Racing Tips: Sandown, Musselburgh, February 1st
Today’s Racing Tips – February 1st
Saturday’s ITV cameras cover the best of the action from Sandown and Musselburgh, with a compelling mix of ultra competitive heritage handicaps and some high class graded jumping. The very wet weather forecast in the south means the Esher venue will be extremely testing, with the final hill sure to produce some slow motion stamina sapping finishes.

Today’s Daily Nap
ETALON
Sandown 2.00 (UK time)
Dan Skelton’s Sandown specialist has been becoming well handicapped this winter under some largely quiet rides in warmer company, and everything looks in place for him to bounce back to winning form here under Harry Skelton. He is a smooth traveller who needs producing late to be seen at his best, and a strong gallop up front should set things up nicely for him to pounce up the final climb to home.
Odds: 4.00
Today’s Value Angle
DARTMOOR PIRATE
Sandown 3.07 (UK time)
Anthony Honeyball’s handicapper posted a career best effort when second at Wincanton last time out, showing a terrific attitude under pressure up the short straight. The emphasis will be much more on stamina here in deep ground under Sam Twiston-Davies, and he showed that suited him ideally when fourth in a huge field here last season.
Odds: 8.00
ITV Racing Tips – Saturday February 1st
Time (UK) | Track | Horse | Analysis |
---|---|---|---|
1:25 | Sandown | OLD TIME CHASER | Nicky Henderson’s unexposed novice has a flyweight to carry in deep ground, and has potential to do a lot better as he gains experience/should relish the emphasis on stamina up the Sandown hill under Nico de Boinville. |
1:42 | Musselburgh | HOSAAMM | Adrian Keatley is beginning to make a real name for himself in the jumping ranks, and his juvenile impressed when landing hefty market confidence last time out. Brian Hughes is an excellent booking, and he will be looking to use the 4-y-o’s speed on the decent good to soft ground expected on Saturday. |
2:00 | Sandown | ETALON | Dan Skelton’s Sandown specialist has been becoming well handicapped this winter under some largely quiet rides in warmer company, and everything looks in place for him to bounce back to winning form here under Harry Skelton. He is a smooth traveller who needs producing late to be seen at his best, and a strong gallop up front should set things up nicely for him to pounce up the final climb to home. |
2:17 | Musselburgh | REWIRED | Tristan Davidson is an extremely shrewd operator to be feared especially when the cash is down, and his handicapper has shaped better than the bare result on a couple of occasions this winter (amidst market weakness). |
2:35 | Sandown | HANDSTANDS | Ben Pauling’s strapping chaser is an extremely assured jumper despite his relative inexperience, and a positive ride from Ben Jones over these demanding fences should make him very hard to beat. He has really impressed in winning twice this winter, and can handle the jump up into Grade 1 company against rivals who lack his scope to improve. |
2:50 | Musselburgh | TRAPRAIN LAW | Lucinda Russell’s strapping chaser has not been at his best so far this season (not disgraced last time at 33/1 in a Kempton Grade 2 won by Soul Icon), but has been given a chance by the handicapper as a result and has optimum conditions at Musselburgh to bounce back to his best under the talented Patrick Wadge. |
3:07 | Sandown | DARTMOOR PIRATE | Anthony Honeyball’s handicapper posted a career best effort when second at Wincanton last time out, showing a terrific attitude under pressure up the short straight. The emphasis will be much more on stamina here in deep ground under Sam Twiston-Davies, and he showed that suited him ideally when fourth in a huge field here last season. |
3:42 | Sandown | GUSTAVIAN | Anthony Honeyball’s stayer has run well in defeat all season, and will relish this stiff three miles on heavy ground under the excellent Sam Twiston-Davies. Jumping errors can be costly but he has plenty of scope over a fence when getting them right, and positive tactics round this track could suit him. |
