Today’s Racing Tips – February 22nd

Saturday’s ITV action brings the best of the action from Kempton and Newcastle, with small but high quality fields at the Sunbury venue after another drying week of weather in the area. In Tyneside, there
will be a huge crowd expected for their ever popular Eider Chase card, and the racing is sure to be extremely competitive as usual. For all-weather fans, there is some rare quality from Southwell, with the Group 3
Winter Derby at 3.15pm sure to attract some interesting entries.

Today’s Daily Nap

ROYSSE

Kempton 3.00 (UK time)

Ben Pauling’s free-going sort is a horse to follow on better ground this spring, with Aintree reportedly on the agenda, and he can land this valuable Grade 2 under the much improved Ben Jones. He should settle better in the early stages now stepping up in class, and a more patient ride is on the cards to use his speed at the business end (forced to make all the running with the choke out at long odds-on last time at Uttoxeter).

Today’s Value Angle

CHOOSETHENEWS

Newcastle 2.10 (UK time)

Joe Tizzard’s unexposed handicapper went into the notebook last time out at Newbury in warm company on testing ground, going freely harried on a strong pace, and he could take plenty of catching round this sharp hurdle course on drying ground. The yard has been in blistering form with 8 winners from their last 29 runners in the past fortnight (28pc strike rate), and he remains with handicapping upside after just seven career starts over hurdles.

ITV Racing Tips – Saturday February 22nd

Time (UK) Track Horse Analysis
01:50 Kempton RUBAUD Paul Nicholl’s unexposed chaser caught the eye when rallying gamely into a closing second behind L’Eau du Sud at Warwick last time out, and is very much one to follow once the ground dries up this spring. He will relish going right-handed at Kempton on Saturday, with Harry Cobden likely to be positive from the tape and try and dominate this small field.
2:10 Newcastle CHOOSETHENEWS Robert Walford’s unexposed chaser has long shaped as though a thorough test of stamina would suit ideally, and this marathon trip on decent eased ground looks a great piece of placing under regular rider Jamie Hamilton. His yard is suddenly in excellent form (3w/14r in the last fortnight), and he is less exposed over these extreme tests than some of these regular northern sluggards.
2:25 Kempton MONDO MAN Gary Moore’s Triumph hurdle entry was very strong in the market but bumped into Lulamba on his Ascot hurdling debut in January, but he has plenty of scope to make the grade at this game and the better ground expected at Kempton on Saturday should suit ideally. He looks a freegoing sort, held in high regard at home, and the emphasis on speed round here should suit if he settles better in the early stages.
2:40 Southwell VALIANT FORCE Adrian Murray is a young trainer to follow through to the turf season this year, and his consistent sprinter impressed when making all at Dundalk 15 days ago. That race-fitness could be an asset here against some classy sprinters, and David Egan is sure to be positive and blast him out of the stalls and try and dominate this field.
3:00 Kempton ROYSSE Ben Pauling’s free-going sort is a horse to follow on better ground this spring, with Aintree reportedly on the agenda, and he can land this valuable Grade 2 under the much improved Ben Jones. He should settle better in the early stages now stepping up in class, and a more patient ride is on the cards to use his speed at the business end (forced to make all the running with the choke out at long odds-on last time at Uttoxeter).
3:15 Southwell PERSICA Richard Hannon’s useful performer ran well in victory and defeat in warm company last summer on the turf, and seems sure to be fit and primed for this valuable AW prize. He won 1 from 2 on artificial surfaces previously before improving from handicaps into Group class last Autumn, and Sean Levey is booked for the ride ahead of this seasonal debut.
3:40 Kempton OUR POWER Sam Thomas is very much a young trainer to follow over the next few seasons, and his 10-y-o chaser is fancied to build on the promise of two efforts at Cheltenham so far this winter. He has won 4 from 12 over fences so far, and returns to the scene of his win in this contest last season under an inspired ride from Sam Twiston-Davies.
