Today’s Racing Tips – March 1st

The ITV cameras continue on the trail to Cheltenham with some cracking racing on Saturday, with the best of the action from varied cards at Doncaster, Kelso and Newbury.

Today’s Daily Nap

HELNWEIN

Kelso 1.10 (UK time)

Alan King’s handicapper has been an expensive failure in three runs over fences so far, but he has struggled in testing ground and now and has optimum conditions at Kelso on Saturday. Tom Cannon will likely have to sit second behind the freewheeling frontrunner Real Stone, but he can overpower that rival up the long run-in.

Odds: 4.00

Today’s Value Angle

MR BRAMLEY

Kelso 2.20 (UK time)

Jedd O’Keefe’s hurdler has now won 4 of his 6 starts over timber, and looked well ahead of the game into handicaps when landing a hefty punt at Wetherby last month. A 6lb rise looks on the lenient side for that authoritative win, and the step up to 2m5f on drying ground promises to suit ideally under another patient ride from regular pilot Conor O’Farrell.

ITV Racing Tips – Saturday March 1st

Time (UK) Track Horse Analysis
01:10 Kelso HELNWEIN Alan King’s handicapper has been an expensive failure in three runs over fences so far, but he has struggled in testing ground and now and has optimum conditions at Kelso on Saturday. Tom Cannon will likely have to sit second behind the freewheeling frontrunner Real Stone, but he can overpower that rival up the long run-in.
1:20 Newbury SAM BROWN Anthony Honeyball’s veteran is more reliable than most in this division, and he can shoulder topweight to victory here under the promising claimer Chad Bament (able to take off a whopping 10lb to relive the burden of 12-2).
1:45 Kelso GREY DAWNING Dan Skelton’s class act is a very smart performer when right, and this looks a far easier opening than his Cheltenham Gold Cup entry in a couple of weeks. He races with zest from the front, jumping superbly when allowed to dominate, and Harry Skelton is likely to take these inferior rivals out of their comfort zone from an early stage.
2:05 Doncaster CARRIG KATE Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero are a team to follow over the next few seasons (two winners in the last fortnight), and their mare has run three cracking races in defeat so far over hurdles. This represents a rise in class, but she is the type to settle better in stronger company and the spring ground at Doncaster should suit under Henry Brooke.
2:20 Kelso MR BRAMLEY Jedd O’Keefe’s hurdler has now won 4 of his 6 starts over timber, and looked well ahead of the game into handicaps when landing a hefty punt at Wetherby last month. A 6lb rise looks on the lenient side for that authoritative win, and the step up to 2m5f on drying ground promises to suit ideally under another patient ride from regular pilot Conor O’Farrell.
2:40 Doncaster RARE EDITION Charlie Longsden has hit form as the ground conditions have improved, with four winners in the last fortnight at a 36pc strike rate, and his chaser has optimum conditions at Doncaster on Saturday. David Bass will likely attempt to dominate the field from the tape, with a small field ideal and his resolution off the bridle a real asset.
2:55 Kelso DEDICATED HERO Sandy Thomson’s progressive novice handled the jump up in class to win gamely in a Grade 2 at Haydock in January, and has been given plenty of time to get over that relatively hard race in testing ground. He remains open to plenty more improvement after just three career starts over hurdles, and regular rider Ryan Mania will be looking to maintain his unbeaten record at Kelso (two bumpers and one hurdle win from three visits so far).
3:15 Doncaster HYMAC Harry Fry’s chaser is far less exposed than most of these northern rivals after just six runs over fences, and he will appreciate the improving spring ground conditions for this valuable and prestigious handicap. A patient ride is on the cards from Bryan Carver, and he can swoop late up the long Doncaster straight.
3:30 Kelso ALNILAM Ollly Murphy’s unexposed handicapper showed much improved form to win at Southwell last time out (first run off the wind-op), and a 4lb rise looks on the lenient side. This is a much better race, but the yard remains in flying form with 8 winners in the last fortnight, and Sean Quinlan will be looking to pounce on the run-in at a track where he has won before.
3:45 Newbury SCARFACE Joe Tizzard continues in excellent form with 5 winners from his last 22 runners, and his consistent chaser will relish as strongly run race on better ground under Brendan Powell. He has been running well in defeat all winter, often travelling like one ahead of his mark, and the assured strong pace in this competitive field should set things up ideally.
