World Wide Technology Championship Overview

Thursday, 2nd November, 11:00 (UK)

The PGA Tour resumes this week with a trip to Mexico for the World Wide Technology Championship. This may be a familiar event to most, the championship having been a regular feature on Tour since 2007. However, with El Camaleon Golf Club now hosting LIV Mayakoba, the PGA Tour has found a new venue in El Cardonal at Diamante.

The Tiger Woods designed course will play as a par 72 with its maximum length listed as a fraction over 7,400 yards. A coastal course with wide fairways, Cardonal is likely to yield plenty of birdies for the players teeing it up this week. Woods suggested that “angles of approach are going to be very important and will dictate the type of shots” players will play but perhaps the biggest feature of El Cardonal is the sizable greens. Almost 25% larger in size than the greens at this year’s Ryder Cup course, Marco Simone, they will pose a problem for those who have difficulty with lag putting.

The wind may be the one factor which keeps a lid on scoring. The current weather forecast suggests the wind shouldn’t be overly strong this week but given the course is beside the sea, gusts can be considerably stronger.

This event marks the start of a three week stretch of tournaments on the PGA Tour which will decide the players who will retain their playing privileges for next year. Those who find themselves well down the FedEx rankings may play with a sense of freedom given they have nothing to lose.

World Wide Technology Championship Tip

Ludvig Aberg heads up the betting this week at odds of 10.00 and it’s hard to make a case against him. The Swede hasn’t finished worse than 15th in his last six starts and should make plenty of birdies on what is essentially a resort course this week. Aberg’s length off the tee can be fully utilised at El Cardonal and this looks a prime opportunity for him to notch his first PGA Tour win.

Perhaps the one uncertainty with Aberg though is how he takes to the Paspalum greens in Mexico. Still relatively inexperienced, we have yet to see how he copes with a change in grass and for that reason I’m prepared to overlook him from the outset.

I’m keen to use Vidanta Villarta, host course of the Mexico Open, as a correlating course given it too features wide fairways and has seen low scoring. Cameron Champ was once again in my thoughts for that reason. Consecutive top ten finishes at Vidanta Villarta indicate Champ should take to the test at El Cardonal. In addition, the large greens this week may benefit Champ given his chipping can often be a weakness.

I’ve had my fingers burnt with Champ several times in the last few weeks though and his effort at the ZOZO Championship was sufficiently disappointing for me to swerve him this time around. Champ is a player I’ll be keeping an eye on once play begins but I’m happy to pass over the 51.00 from the outset.

Davis Riley signed off with a Sunday 66 last time out at the ZOZO Championship and I like him to bring that momentum into this week’s event in Mexico. That final round saw him claim 31st position in Japan, following a 28th place finish at the Shriners Children’s Open. Riley has a fifth place finish at the Mexico Open to his name and also triumphed in this region when winning the Panama Championship in 2020 on the Korn Ferry Tour. Above average length off the tee, he looks the pick of the World Wide Technology Championship tips at 51.00 with bet365.

Those of you looking for a bigger price may well want to consider Kelly Kraft, who rates as my favourite long shot selection of the week. The 2011 US Amateur winner has been much improved of late, recording four consecutive top 40 finishes. Kraft has an excellent record at the Corales Puntacana event, with three top 15 finishes, and I like that as another correlating course. The safe play would be to take Kraft at 2.90 for a top 40 finish with bet365 but I wouldn’t put anyone off the 176.00 on Kraft winning. He’s 151st in the FedEx Rankings so nothing less than a big week will suffice.

  • Selection: Davis Riley EW (1/5 1-8)
  • Best Odds: 51.00 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 1/10
