Shriners Children's Open Best Bet: 46.00 Pick For This Weekend’s Action

Shriners Children's Open Best Bet: 46.00 Pick For This Weekend’s Action

Shriners Children’s Open Best Bet: Thursday, October 12th

TPC Summerlin is once again the host course for the Shriners Children’s Open. We have analysed the betting markets to bring you our Shriners Children’s Open best bet.

Shriners Children’s Open Preview

Thursday, 12th October, 12:00 (UK)

The Shriners Children’s Open returns to TPC Summerlin, having done so each year since 1992. Playing as a par 71 once again, the course will play to a maximum length of 7,255 yards.

TPC Summerlin is a desert course with very little defence. Wide fairways and minimal rough allow for players to attack off the tee but accurate approach play is the key to winning this week. It is no coincidence that five of the last seven winners of this event have ranked inside the top seven for SG: Approach on the week they triumphed.

The last five editions of this tournament have been won with a score between -21 and -24. Strong winds caused problems in 2017 but with the sun set to shine all week and winds set to blow no more than 10mph, scoring should once again be good.

This is the third tournament of the FedExCup Fall. Players who finished outside the top 70 in the FedExCup rankings need to ensure they finish inside the top 125 in the rankings at the end of November to retain their playing privileges for next year. Most players in this week’s field played in the Sanderson Farms Championship last week but be aware that several players are teeing it up for the first time in a few weeks.

One notable addition to the field this week is Lexi Thompson. Thompson will aim to become only the second woman to make the cut on the PGA Tour, the last being Babe Zaharias in 1945.

Shriners Children’s Open Best Bet

Tom Kim and Ludvig Aberg vie for favouritism at the front of the outright betting and it’s difficult to separate them. Kim is the defending champion and comes into the event with six consecutive top 25 finishes. Aberg is the rising superstar who excelled at the Ryder Cup and narrowly missed out on his first PGA Tour title at last week’s Sanderson Farms Championship.

Kim and Aberg clearly need to be respected but this event has thrown up some shock winners in the past and I’m not inclined to side with either of the favourites. We only have to look back to 2020 to find evidence of this, Martin Laird winning that year at 276.0. Players such as Rod Pampling, Smylie Kaufman and Ben Martin have all triumphed at TPC Summerlin in the past ten years. Don’t be afraid to take on the front two with some big each way selections this week.

One player who may surprise is Adam Long. Winner of the Desert Classic in 2019, he’s shown he can compete in desert surroundings. A 35th place finish last week in Mississippi was largely built on a tidy short game but his stats were excellent in Sunday’s final round and he could be one to watch this week at 226.0 with bet365.

Despite liking Long, it is Davis Thompson who rates as my best bet this week. A former amateur number 1, he’s been forgotten about slightly due to the meteoric rise of Aberg and Kim amongst others. However, he has plenty going for him this week and could usurp the two at the front of the betting.

Thompson recorded a 12th place finish on debut here last year, his fourth best PGA Tour finish to date. A 2nd place finish at this year’s American Express event further solidified his desert credentials. Only Jon Rahm was able to better his score that week and Thompson can consider himself unfortunate not to be a PGA Tour winner already.

Recent form has been encouraging too. Three consecutive top 30 finishes, including 16th last week, bode well. He ranked third for Total Driving and ninth in SG: Approach at the Sanderson, further evidence that his game is in a good spot at the moment. Take the 46.0 with bet365 for eight each way places.

Those of you looking for a selection in one of the alternative markets may want to consider the Make The Cut market offered by bet365. Patrick Rodgers can be backed at 2.75 to Miss The Cut, an occurrence which has happened on five of his last eight starts in this event. The 31 year old from California hasn’t played in the last eight weeks and there may be an element of rust this week.

  • Selection: Davis Thompson EW (1/5 1-8)
  • Best Odds: 46.00 (bet365)
  • Stakes: 1/10

Odds via bet365 as at 12.55 October 10th 2023. Odds may now differ.
