Butterfield Bermuda Championship Overview
Thursday, 9th November, 11:00 (UK)
The PGA Tour returns to familiar surroundings this week, having ventured to the Tiger Woods designed El Cardonal for last week’s World Wide Technology Championship. This will be the fifth consecutive year Port Royal Golf Club hosts the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.
Those of you relying on last week’s form should keep in mind that Port Royal is markedly different from the test the players faced at El Cardonal. Whilst El Cardonal played as a 7,400 yard par 72 with very little wind, the course at Port Royal will almost certainly be affected by the breeze. Around 600 yards shorter than last week’s course in Mexico, Port Royal plays to a par of 71.
Unlike last week, where players hit fairways at will, Port Royal also offers a tighter test off the tee. Hitting fairways and greens is obviously important but scrambling skills should be factored in too. Players will miss greens when the wind blows and having the ability to save par will be extremely beneficial. Three of the last four winners ranked inside the top twenty for scrambling for the week.
The current weather forecast suggests benign conditions on Thursday, with the wind picking up over the following three days. Those players who play early on Friday morning may have a slight advantage at the time of writing.
This is the penultimate event of the season for players to keep their Tour cards. The pressure is therefore on those who are in or around the cut off.
Butterfield Bermuda Championship Tip
Aussie Adam Scott heads up the betting this week but he looks an opposable favourite given he makes his course debut and hasn’t played since a couple of weak efforts in Japan at the end of last month. The youngster, Akshay Bhatia, and two veterans, Lucas Glover and Brendon Todd, are respected behind Scott in the betting but all look short enough and the value certainly looks further down the market.
Only twelve players have a higher world ranking than Brandon Wu in this field and he looks a bit of value at 51.00 with bet365. Wu has teed it up twice in Bermuda to date, recording a pair of top 35 finishes. However, it is his form at other coastal events which interests me most. A runner up finish at Pebble Beach earlier this year, third at the Puerto Rico Open last year and seventh at the Puerto Rico Open in 2021 all suggest he’s comfortable in a bit of breeze and likes the test of seaside golf.
Consecutive top three finishes at the Mexico Open in each of the last two years further cements the theory that Wu isn’t far away from a win on the PGA Tour. His recent finishes have been indifferent but he’s made the cut in his last six starts and this week’s assignment should suit him far better than last week’s birdie fest.
Despite my liking for Wu, this may be an event which is best approached in-play. Each of the four course winners were at least three shots off the pace after round one and three of those players were at least five shots behind after round one. Look for some big prices after the opening round.
If you do decide to take a cautious approach in the outright market before the event begins, you may wish to consider the Miss The Cut market with bet365. Amateur Nick Dunlap looks to have a bright career ahead of him but odds of 3.25 for him to miss the cut are an interesting proposition. Winner of the U.S. Amateur in August, Dunlap has been a shining light in the amateur ranks but is making his first PGA Tour start and is no certainty to make the weekend.
Kevin Yu looks like the other outstanding option in the Miss The Cut market with bet365. A third place finish at last year’s Bermuda Championship remains his career best PGA Tour finish but his recent form is enough to put anyone off the former amateur number one. Five missed cuts from his last six starts could be read as six from six if you take into account his 59th place finish at the ZOZO Championship came in a 78 man field with no cut. He’s clearly struggling at the moment and a price of 2.75 to miss the cut certainly warrants consideration.
