Wigan vs Man United Predictions: Tips and Best Bets Preview
Our expert, Scott Thornton, brings you his Wigan vs Man United predictions ahead of their clash in the third round of the FA Cup. Erik Ten Hag’s side have been handed a rare away draw in the cup but they will be hoping to come through this one unscathed after a woeful first half of the season.
Is there a Cupset on the horizon? United’s form suggests there could be. However, Scott thinks United might run away with proceedings here.

Wigan vs Man United Tip 1: It should be comfortable…
England, FA Cup, Monday, January 8th, 20:15 (UK)
Manchester United have stumbled their way through the season so far. They are languishing outside of the top four and this is their only chance to secure any silverware. Erik Ten Hag’s side were beaten by Nottingham Forest in their last match, just after their morale-boosting comeback win over Aston Villa. The defeat was typical of their season, but he will want to make a statement when his team takes on Wigan.
The Latics ply their trade in League One. They have fallen from grace since beating Manchester City in the FA Cup final in 2013. They are now slugging it out in a relegation battle in the third tier of English football – largely thanks to a points deduction.
Wigan also have an unsurprisingly poor record against United. The Red Devils won the title the last season that the Latics were in the Premier League. However, the teams have met once in the FA Cup since and United ran out 4-0 winners.
It should be another comfortable victory for United here and the fixture is hugely important for Ten Hag, who could feel the pressure after Sir Jim Ratcliffe arrived at Old Trafford. We can back Manchester United -1.5,2.0 on the Asian handicap market. This means we win half of our bet if they win by two goals and anything more will result in a full payout.
- Wigan vs Manchester United Tip 1: Manchester United -1.5,2.0 Asian Handicap (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 1.92

- Stake: 8/10
Wigan vs Man United Tip 2: Underdogs Approach Can Force Throws
Manchester United have been far from in control this season. Erik Ten hag has taken a gamble on the composition of his midfield and United look vulnerable as a result. The deeper defensive players are often left isolated and their matches are often reduced to a frantic back-and-forth scramble. As a result, United’s matches see more throws than most of the top teams in the Premier League.
The Red Devils’ away matches in all competitions this season are averaging 40 throws per game. There have been 39 or more throws in their last six away matches and there has been an average of 43.17 per game in that period. United’s cosmetic cup matches since Ten Hag took charge have seen an average of 38.87 throws.
Wigan don’t have the quality to compete here so they will have to make it a battle. They are likely to resort to long balls to trouble this United defence and this can aid the throw count. The Latics’ competitive home matches this season have seen an average of 44.25 throws per game.
- Wigan vs Manchester United Tip 2: Over 37.5 Throws In The Match (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 1.83
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 7/10
Wigan vs Man United Tip 3: Fewer Goal Kicks as United Go Through the Motions
Manchester United’s away matches this season have seen a decent number of goal kicks overall but the average of 14.62 per match is below the line set by bet365 in this one. We are backing under 15.5 in the match at odds of 2.00 and it is a bet that has won in their last two away matches.
The way Erik Ten Hag has set up his defence this season has left a lot to be desired but Wigan are unlikely to have the quality to exploit any frailties.
Wigan will look to disrupt United’s rhythm but the visitors should have the quality to limit the amount of opportunities that their opponents have. The Red Devils’ attack has faced scathing criticism this season for their poor goal output. United have spent exorbitant sums on attackers and while they are capable of putting Wigan to the sword, it is unlikely they will lay siege to the goal in a way that the Premier League’s top sides would. This should lead to fewer goal kicks for the underdogs.
- Wigan vs Man United Tip 3: Under 15.5 Goal Kicks in the Match (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 2.00
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 10/10
Wigan vs Man United Team News Preview: Evans Set to Feature Once Again
Wigan don’t have any injury worries coming into this one but the same cannot be said about the visitors. United have been plagued by injury this season. The likes of Casemiro, Mount, Martinez and Malacia are nearing a return but Ten Hag is unlikely to risk any of them here.
Jadon Sancho is on the verge of a move to Borussia Dortmund after being exiled from the squad. Harry Maguire is also missing, so the visitors will likely name Jonny Evans in the starting 11 once again, a player who was offered a one-year contract after training with the club.
