We bring you our Turkey vs Georgia prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview courtesy of Scott Thornton ahead of this group opener in Euro 2024.

Vincenzo Montella’s side are the favourites for this match but they know that Georgia represents a potential banana skin. Winning this opening match against the group outsiders is hugely important with tougher tests to come. Willy Sagnol’s side needed a playoff to get to this point.

Turkey vs Georgia Prediction 1: Turkey to Exorcise the Demons of 2021

England, Euro 2024, Tuesday, June 18th, 17:00 (UK)

Turkey entered the last European Championships with high hopes, but it all went horribly wrong. Many tipped them as dark horses for the tournament, but they finished bottom of Group A, behind Italy, Wales and Switzerland, failing to pick up a single point in the process. The team scored just once and conceded eight. They will be looking to put that nightmare campaign behind them and confine it to the history books by having a successful tournament this time around.

Montella’s side were beaten 6-1 by Austria in their last match but did remarkably well in qualifying. They finished ahead of Croatia thanks to a 1-0 win in Zagreb. The manager will be hoping that his side can rediscover the form that got them to the point after a couple of disappointing friendly results. Despite those defeats, they still look good for the win against Georgia.

The Georgians have lost four of their ten matches before their warmup match against Montenegro. They edged past Greece on penalties in the final of their playoff to make it to the group stages and have struggled against some of the better nations. Their only wins in their last 10 have come against Cyprus, Luxembourg and Thailand.

You have to go back to 2012 to find the last time these teams squared off. Turkey won that match 3-1. They know there is no room for error in this one with Portugal awaiting them in their next match so Montella’s men should do a thoroughly professional job.

Turkey vs Georgia Prediction 2: Georgia Must Go For it

Georgia have nothing to lose ahead of this match and will want to give a good account of themselves. This will be their first-ever appearance at a European Championships. The football team has the chance to unite what is currently a divided nation.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is Georgia’s star man. His exploits in the 2022/23 season meant he was named the Serie A player of the season. His performances helped Napoli win their first title since the days of Diego Maradona. Khvicha has also been dubbed ‘Kvaradona’ by many Neopolitans, which is high praise, considering the God-like status that Diego has in that region of Italy. Kvaratskhelia doesn’t have the supporting cast when playing for the national team but he can have an impact and help the minnows get on the scoresheet here.

The Georgian’s last ten matches have seen an average of 3.8 goals. They are scoring an average of 2.1 per game in that period. Kvaratskshelia will likely have to come up with the goods for his team to have success but he is more than capable. The Napoli winger loves to dribble with the ball. He ranked in the top 4% for progressive carries when compared with all wingers in Europe’s top five leagues.

Turkey conceded in their four matches before their warmup friendlies. Austria were able to carve open the Turkish defence at will when the teams met in March. Georgia doesn’t have the same quality across the pitch as Austria, but they can have some success in their tournament opener.

Turkey vs Georgia Euro 2024 Team News and Possible Lineups: Guler Has the Chance to Shine

Arda Guler could be key for Turkey in this tournament. His opportunities have been limited at Real Madrid but he shone when given the chance in the tail end of the season. The midfielder scored four goals in three La Liga starts in May before returning to the bench ahead of the Champions League final. He should relish the opportunity to play in Euro 2024.

Willy Sagnol is a name that will be familiar to those who watched European football from the early 2000s. The defender was a stalwart for Bayern Munich but he is now looking to make an impact as a manager. It’ll be interesting to see how he sets his team up as they look to cause an upset.

Turkey possible starting lineup:
Cakir; Muldur, Demiral, Ayhan, Ozkacar; Ozcan, Calhangolu, Guler; Kahveci, Akturkoglu, Yildiz

Georgia possible starting lineup:
Mamardashvili; Kvirkvelia, Kashia, Dvali; Kiteishvili; Kakabadze, Kochorashvili, Chakvetadze, Shengelia; Zivzivadze, Kvaratsekhelia
