Tottenham vs Burnley Predictions: Tips and Best Bets Preview
LONDON, ENGLAND - DECEMBER 31: Richarlison during the Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and AFC Bournemouth at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on December 31, 2023 in London, England.

It’s Tottenham vs Burnley in the FA Cup third round on Friday night, with Matthew O’Regan on hand to give three predictions and tips for the match.

Both sides will be hoping to make it through their first challenge in the cup, as they aim to go far in the tournament. Will Spurs’ absentees inadvertently feed optimism into the visiting camp?

Tottenham vs Burnley Tip 1: Scintillating Spurs

England, FA Cup, Friday, January 5th, 20:00 (UK)

Spurs are on fire in the Premier League, sitting in 5th place, just six points off the top spot. Despite some major defensive injuries, they have won four of their last five games and have still managed to outscore teams to fire them up the table.

As for Burnley, Vincent Kompany’s side has struggled to adapt to Premier League football after winning the Championship last season. They are currently all the way down in 19th, managing just three wins in their opening twenty games this campaign.

Even though this may be a cup match, there is no doubt that both sides will treat it as seriously as they can. Spurs will be without captain Heung Min Son as he is out on international duty, but Spurs certainly have enough talent elsewhere to bring them goals.

When the two sides met in September, just four games into the season, Spurs demolished Burnley away from home, winning 5-2. All five goals, however, came from players who will not feature on Friday night, three of which coming from Son, so there is a slither of hope for Burnley.

Despite the injuries and missing players for Spurs, there shouldn’t be much trouble for them in Burnley’s side. They have conceded 41 goals already this season and have only managed to score 20. With Spurs not having lifted silverware since 2008 and already out of the Carabao Cup, it will certainly be a big aim for them to go far in this competition, and they will make sure to be at their very best in this third-round tie.

Tottenham vs Burnley Tip 2: Richarlison to continue hot streak

Since Richarlison joined Spurs in the summer of 2022, he has struggled for form, only managing one goal in 27 Premier League games last season.

However, this year, it seems under a new boss in Ange Postecoglou and new attacking tactics, he is back to being a goal scorer for his team, just like he was at the 2022 World Cup for Brazil. In his last five games for Spurs, he has scored in four, including a brace against Newcastle to start his hot streak in front of goal.

With Heung Min Son now out for Spurs for the next few weeks at least, it will be up to the Brazilian to lead the line for Tottenham and be the primary source of goals, as he has been for the previous month or so. If he gets the start as the central striker against Burnley, there is no doubt he will get chances in front of goal against Burnley’s sub-par defence. He is averaging 0.64 xG per90 so far this season, and if he has his shooting boots on, he will be on the scoresheet for Tottenham.

Tottenham vs Burnley Tip 3: Burnley to exploit Tottenham defensive woes

Despite all the praise I have given so far for Spurs, they do have one problem this season that has cost them in games, and that is conceding goals.

In the league, they have conceded almost a goal and a half per game, and in their last 11 games, they’ve only managed to keep one clean sheet. A big reason for this has been the injuries they have sustained at the back, the latest being World Cup winner Cristian Romero, who looks to be out for over a month. The injuries have been piling up, and they have been forced to play the likes of Emerson Royal and Ben Davies as centre-backs in a back four instead of their usual full-back positions.

This gives any team that plays them currently some hope, as there will be opportunities to score, and Burnley could take full advantage of that. The Clarets are still managing to average a goal a game in the league, and most recently managed to score two at Villa Park, and miss out on claiming a surprising draw after a 97th-minute penalty went against them. There is talent in Burnley’s attack; with the likes of Lyle Foster and Zeki Amdouni leading the line, there is always a threat on the counter-attack.

Burnley will go into this game with nothing to lose and will know there will be mistakes at the back for Spurs that can be taken advantage of, and if they do, it could make for a great game with both teams finding the net.

Tottenham vs Burnley Team News Preview: Injury-riddled hosts

Tottenham have been riddled with injuries this season. Micky Van De Ven, James Maddison, Ivan Perisic, Cristian Romero and Pape Sarr will all miss the contest with injuries. Captain Heung Min Son will also miss the game, as he will be playing for South Korea at the Asian Cup games, which will mean the likes of Brennan Johnson, Richarlison, and Kulusevski will need to step up in his place.

As for Burnley, Italian forward Luca Koleosho is the only player to be missing the game due to an injury. Apart from him, Vincent Kompany will have a full selection of players available against Spurs as they look to cause an upset in the FA Cup and move on to the fourth round.
