Southampton vs Newcastle Bet Builder Tips: Tuesday, January 24th

The first of this season’s League Cup semi-finals takes place on Tuesday evening at St Mary’s and we’ve got you some Southampton v Newcastle bet builder tips.

An all-Premier League line-up leaves the romantic element of the cup lacking but it should set us up for two more closely contested matches.

This one on the south coast pits the basement boys against a high-flying Toon side.

Nath Jones’ side stunned Manchester City in the last round and it will take an equally flawless display to make it to Wembley.

Southampton vs Newcastle Preview

England, League Cup, Tuesday, January 24, 20:00 (UK)

Aston Villa put an end to Southampton’s three-game unbeaten run at the weekend.

The Saints looked to have taken the lead through James Ward-Prowse, the goal was then struck by VAR, before Ollie Watkins scored the only legal goal of the game 13 minutes from time.

This leaves Nathan Jones’ side rooted to the bottom of the table. Though only two points off safety, they are not yet cut adrift.

The FA Cup third round was where Jones picked up the first win of his tenure, and it proved to be a springboard for more with a win over perennial champions Manchester City in the last round and a huge three points at Goodison Park.

Cup competitions proved just the tonic for Jones and his disastrous start to life in the top tier galvanising the club.

He will no doubt go as strong as possible here. Ward-Prowse, Che Adams and Mohammed Salisu all should start.

As for the visitors, Eddie Howe is without Matt Targett, Jonjo Shelvey and Emil Krafth.

Alexander Isak should lead the line, flanked by Joelinton and Miguel Almiron.

Newcastle thumped Southampton 4-1 when these sides last met at the start of November and at odds-on favourites they are clearly fancied by the bookmakers to repeat that feat.

Recent history suggests when these League Cup semi-finals’ first legs that involve top-flight teams exclusively, goals are not rife.

Since the games in 2013/14, because that was as far as I could be arsed to go back, there have been 14 Premier League matchups, 10 have seen unders click with an average of 2.3 goals scored.

Given Newcastle’s resolute defence, I do not expect goals to be rife here either.

Eddie Howe’s side have failed to break the deadlock in half of their last six games, with the stalemates coming against Leeds, then at the Emirates and Selhurst Park.

Over the course of the season, they have only conceded more than one goal on three occasions, at Hillsborough, against Liverpool in a 1-2 defeat, and their 3-3 draw at home to Manchester City.

In the Magpies’ 25 games in all competitions, they have shipped an average of 0.56 goals per game, keeping clean sheets in a staggering 60%.

Since mid-October, they have played 15 games and over that 900 minutes of action, only Harry Kane, Romain Perraud and Josh Windass have managed to break their resilience.

With all that considered I think under 2.5 goals is a bet and I will be combining it with under 2.5 cards at 5.00 with Betfair and Paddy Power.

I would urge you to shop around though. As I write, the day before the game, a surprisingly stingy amount of card markets have been priced.

I suspect, if they are eventually priced, William Hill, bet365, Paddy Power and Betfair may better these odds.

Siding with a lack of cards seems logical given the dynamic these first leg matches often adapt with neither side wanting to give too much away.

  • Under 2.5 goals
  • Under 2.5 cards
