Horse Racing Saturday Premier League Double: 18th December
I’ve got both matches on my card for this Premier League double. There are only a couple of games in the Premier League this Saturday but I’ve got both on my card. Selection 1: Aston Villa vs Burnley – Burnley +0.5 (AH), Under 3 Goals
I’m backing Burnley to bring Aston Villa’s resurgence under Steven Gerrard to a halt in this match. Sean Dyche’s men have become one of my favourite sides to bet on this campaign. They’re flying under the radar in terms of results and betting value. They’ve lost only one of their last seven matches in the Premier League and taken points off teams like Chelsea, West Ham and Crystal Palace in that time.
The Clarets rarely concede too many goals. They’ve only let in one in their last three matches. They conceded just six goals in five matches against Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and West Ham. Not too many sides in the Premier League will have that record.
And it’s about time for Steven Gerrard’s Villa resurgence to hit a roadblock. That is usually the case when a new manager takes over in the Premier League. The new manager’s bounce often leads to stabilisation and some quick changes but things soon return to the norm, as I discussed in my investigative piece last month. Villa lost five straight matches before Gerrard’s appointment. They’ve since stabilised with four wins from six games. I think we’ll see Villa start to drop off in the coming weeks, starting with this match.

Selection 2: Leeds vs Arsenal – Arsenal +0.5 (AH), Under 3 Goals.
The Gunners secured a massive morale-boosting win in midweek. That 2-0 victory over West Ham was their second win to nil in a row and it put them back on the path towards a European spot. The Gunners have dropped in the Premier League top 6 odds and now stand at 1.57. They’ll need another result here to keep up the chase but I have my doubts over whether they’ll get the three points. Arsenal usually struggle for consistency after a big win like that but I’m still backing them to get something out of the match.
They face a Leeds side that has struggled. Marcelo Bielsa’s men were decimated by Manchester City in midweek. The 7-0 defeat was the joint-heaviest in the Premier League this season alongside Chelsea’s destruction of Norwich in October. Leeds have now won only one of their seven. They’ve lost two consecutive Premier League matches for the first time since February. They haven’t lost three on the spin since returning to the Premier League in 2020.
That’s part of the reason why I’m going for Arsenal to win or draw. I can see a low-scoring match as well which adds to that. Both sides have struggled to score goals for some time. Leeds have scored one goal or fewer in 13 of their 17 Premier League matches this season. Arsenal’s stats aren’t much better on the road. Only Norwich have scored fewer away goals than the Gunners this campaign. I can see a low-scoring Gunners win the odd goal or a 1-1 draw between these sides at Elland Road.
