Sao Paulo to Lift The Trophy Inside 90 Minutes
São Paulo has the perfect opportunity to win their first-ever Copa do Brasil title on Sunday. Not only will they win the domestic trophy, but they’ll cement their place in next year’s Copa Libertadores. Plenty is at stake – but plenty is also in their favour.
That’s largely down to the current state of their opponents. Flamengo have been a mess both on and off the pitch for a while now. The opportunity to finish a poor season with a trophy was presented to them last weekend, but another really poor performance at the Maracana has seen further tension behind the scenes.
The only thing keeping Jorge Sampaoli in his job is his expensive contract. It would cost the club over $2 million to release him from his duties – one which the fans are crying out for. However, the club already forked out for Vitor Pereira’s early dismissal at the beginning of the campaign.
Gabriel Barbosa normally relishes the big competitions and matches – but he was a passenger last weekend and was booed off – far from ideal for the Brazilian.
I haven’t even touched on the recent fights between players, players AND coaches, as well as the owner being attacked by a fan in a shopping centre this week. There’s simply too much chaos going on for Flamengo to rally and save the tie.
São Paulo has the perfect opportunity to lift the trophy, and if they don’t concede, they can do so within 90 minutes.
Under 2.5 Goals
Although Flamengo are in all kinds of trouble, it’ll still be a tight tussle on Sunday. São Paulo will prioritise standing firm, while Flamengo will know if they are to concede a second, there will be no way back from 2-0.
It’s worth recalling that São Paulo had no real opportunities at the Maracana until they were gifted their goal on the stroke of half-time. They set up for a 0-0 draw but came away with an invaluable lead.
However, with that lead to protect and a first Copa do Brasil title on the line, expect Dorival Junior’s team to defend resolutely – especially in front of their own supporters.
Fortunately for the hosts, Junior is a winner. Having previously managed Flamengo, he’ll know all the tricks in the book to get his side over the line.
Under 11.5 Corners
With it being the second leg of a final, perhaps corners will be one of the high-volume statistics at the end of the match. However, with both of these teams approaching the match cautiously – especially the opening 45 – this part of the bet builder could be on the verge of winning at the halfway stage.
São Paulo mustered up four in the first half at the Maracana before sitting deep and winning a grand total of zero in the second half. It was the opposite for Flamengo, but despite having to chase the game in front of their own fans, they managed to win just three corners of their own in the second half. Stuck for ideas, a lack of direct play meant Sao Paulo didn’t have to overexert themselves.
At home, when Sao Paulo are holding on to a lead, they rarely rack up the corner count. In fact, in their last ten home wins, they’ve never gone over eight corners – including two second-leg ties where they were behind and chasing the match.
In both meetings this season, there have been ten corners or less between Sao Paulo and Flamengo. With a low-scoring final expected, Junior’s side will approach with caution and defend in blocks, preventing Flamengo from racking up any substantial amount of corners of their own.
