Romania vs Ukraine Prediction 1: Rebrov’s Men To Shine
Euro 2024, Monday June 17th, 17:00 (UK)
Opening round encounters are often tricky to navigate. The clash between Romania and Ukraine in Group E is an intriguing fixture and one I look forward to watching. Sergiy Rebrov’s men are favourites, currently priced at 2.10. Eduard Iordanescu’s Romania will be a stubborn opponent. They’re available to back at 3.40.
Ukraine is a worthy favourite for me. Their squad is impressive and has many recognisable names. Ukraine have just held Germany to a 0-0 draw. We know friendly matches mean nothing, but it indicates what they can do. Ukraine has the potential of making a decent run in this competition. That result in Nuremberg will give them confidence.
Romania is the third-best side in Group E. Qualifying was straightforward in a group that lacked quality. Switzerland was the other standout nation. Iordanescu’s side will be tough to break down. They have the capability of frustrating opponents and allowing little chances. They’ll be more than happy with a point against Ukraine.
I’m happy with that Ukraine price. It is a side with quality and experience. They’re a nation that fights for each other, as shown on the pitch.
Foundations in place
Lunin, Zabarnyi, Matviienko, Zinchenko, Sudakov, Tsygankov and Dovbyk are excellent. That’s a superb foundation and one that should impress in Germany. The Real Madrid shot-stopper was fantastic in his side’s Champions League triumphs. Artem Dovbyk won the Pichichi prize as the top goalscorer in La Liga for 2023/24.
This Ukraine side can go all the way against the elite. They held England and Italy in qualifying. Two draws against Germany within the last 12 months must be considered. They could be a potential dark horse, depending if everything clicks.
Ukraine on the Asian Handicap is my angle of attack. I struggle to see them lose at the Allianz Arena. A draw isn’t ideal, but not the worst result. There’s a gulf in class between these two. Romania will have respect for their counterparts. It’s Rebrov’s men who I’ll be cheering on in Munich.

Romania vs Ukraine Prediction 2: Artem To Score Once Again
There aren’t many players who can say that they had a better season than Artem Dovbyk. It’s a name we’ve begun to hear frequently across the 23/24 campaign. The Ukrainian endured a sublime debut season with Girona in La Liga, where they finished third. Artem was crowned top scorer in Spain and awarded the Pichichi trophy.
I have been highlighting Dovbyk many times across my previews over the last few months. He’s proven to be a profitable selection in the anytime goalscorer market. He’ll be brimming with confidence heading to Germany, especially with a Ukrainian side that possesses plenty of attacking talent.
Shopping lists
I’m always reluctant to back goals in opening matches in any competition. The European Championships are massive. It’s a tournament where players can excel and develop their careers. Artem Dovbyk’s name will be at the top of many clubs’ shopping lists across the continent looking for a forward. If he can continue his excellent scoring form, then who knows where the 26-year-old will play his football next season.
The goal line is set at 2.25 in this fixture. That’s more than fair. Ukraine is priced at 1.25 to find the back of the net and 2.20 to score multiple times. Girona’s star man must be starting from the get-go, surely? He has every possible chance of grabbing a goal.
Artem’s La Liga record was fantastic. He averaged 0.83 goals per 90. Six of his 29-headed attempts ended up in the back of the net. He isn’t a one-dimensional centre forward. There’s plenty to enjoy about his game.
Our man scored in his most recent start for his country. That was in a mightily important fixture. His strike late on against Bosnia was the difference in Zenica. I’m expecting big things in this competition. Bring your shooting boots to Germany with you, Artem!

Player to watch: Artem Dovbyk
- Nation: Ukraine
- Club: Girona
- Position: Forward
- Selection: Artem Dovbyk to Score Anytime
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Odds: 2.87
He’s been one of the signings of the season in Europe. Brought to Girona for €7 million, Arem Dovbyk finished as the top scorer in La Liga in his debut season in Spain. The Girona frontman bagged 24 goals in 36 matches for the season’s surprise package.
He’s not really the new kid on the block at major tournaments. Dovbyk was chosen for his nation at Euro 2020. Back playing in his native Ukraine for Dnipro-1, Dovbyk was far from first choice but still produced one of his nation’s best moments at a major tournament with that 121st-minute winning goal against Sweden to send them through to the quarter finals.
His stature and standing have only grown. He’s the main man for head coach Serhiy Rebrov’s side. He’s bagged four goals in his last seven matches for his nation. Two of the three matches in which he failed to score in that run were against Germany and Italy. Dovbyk bagged 12 in his last 12 in all competitions for club and country.
At 2.87 to score anytime, Dovbyk carries value in this match. Mykhailo Mudryk led the way statistically for most of Ukraine’s attacking metrics in the qualifiers but things will be different in Germany. The tighter, cagier tournament football may suit Dovbyk more.
Romania vs Ukraine Team News and Possible Lineups: Ukraine Supply The Recognisable Names
The Ukrainian squad is full of talent. There’s a mixture of youth and experience. I expect Ukraine to set up in a 4-3-3 formation, with the wingers playing a vital role.
I think we can pick a majority of the starting eleven ourselves. This team will cause fear to some. Many of those Ukrainian internationals have performed tremendously for their clubs this season. They’ll be hoping that they can perform just as well in Germany.
Romania has a decent squad. Radu Dragusin is arguably the most recognisable name. They’ll be resolute in defence and will frustrate sides.
I’m not sure if we can expect many goals involving Romania. There are not many standouts from an offensive perspective.
Romania possible starting lineup:
Moldovan; Ratiu, Dragusin, Burca, Bancu, Marin, Stanciu, Cicaldau, Morutan, Coman; Alibec
Ukraine possible starting lineup:
Lunin; Mykolenko, Matviienko, Zabarnyi, Konoplya, Stepanenko, Zinchenko, Mudryk, Sudakov, Tsygankov; Dovbyk
