Roma vs Feyenoord Prediction: The Olimpico will play its part
Europa League, Play-offs, 2nd leg, Thursday, February 22nd, 20:00 (UK)
The Giallorossi were admirable in the first leg in Rotterdam for trying to attack and impose their style of play.
Roma adopted a very different approach from the one that saw them grinding out results, especially away from home, under Josè Mourinho en route to last year’s final.
As often, they made individual mistakes that gave Feyenoord courage but left the De Kuip with the feeling they were favourites to reach the Round of 16.
Daniele De Rossi’s side have a great record in the capital: they’ve scored at least a goal in the last 27 games in all competitions, and last season, they beat the Dutch 4-1 after extra-time.
Roma’s confidence will be very high after their 3-0 success over Frosinone over the weekend in a game where Azmoun and Baldanzi took their chances to impress and where, crucially, Paulo Dybala was given a full rest.
The Argentine has scored 18 of his 26 Roma goals at the Olimpico and will be key on Thursday.
Changing Pace
The change of pace under De Rossi has been evident: Roma have now won four of the last five in Serie A, as many as in their previous 11 games.
But more importantly, is their home record in knockout ties that instils great confidence.
In fact, the Giallorossi are unbeaten in the last 16 home European knockout games, with the last defeat coming in February 2017 (Roma vs Villareal 0-1) when Daniele De Rossi was still
playing.
Over the last seven years, Roma have won 14 and drawn two (against Ajax and Vitesse) home matches, beating the likes of Barça, Liverpool, Manchester United, Real Sociedad, and Bayer Leverkusen.
Feyenoord had a couple of important players missing in the first leg (above all Biljow, Timber, and Trauner) and has won the last three encounters away from home.
However, in Europe, their form on the road is poor: they’ve conceded in their last eight trips and haven’t won since April 2022, when they were playing in the Conference League.

Roma vs Feyenoord Team News and Possible Lineups: Dybala and Lukaku not to be scoffed at
Paulo Dybala was rested against Frosinone on the weekend, meaning the Argentine will be unleashed against Feyenoord with a likely spring in his step. With Roma forward Romelu Lukaku being directly involved in more goals than any other player in the UEFA Europa League this season (7), scoring six goals and providing one assist, they combine to make a potent Europa League strikeforce.
Feyenoord have won just one of their 18 away games in the UEFA Europa League (D6 L11), the joint-worst win rate (5.6%) amongst the 110 teams to play 10+ matches on the road in the competition. The sole exception is a 3-0 win against Standard Liège in Belgium in December 2014. At the Olimpico, they may need all the help they can get.
Roma possible starting lineup:
Svilar; Karsdorp, Mancini, Llorente, Spinazzola; Cristante, Paredes, Pellegrini; Dybala, Lukaku, El Shaarawy
Feyenoord possible starting lineup:
Wellenreuther; Geertruida, Beelen, Hancko, Hartman; Stengs, Timber, Wieffer; Minteh, Giménez, Paixao
Match Stats: A first for Daniele De Rossi
- Roma are unbeaten in six previous home games against Dutch opposition (W2 D4), their joint-most times facing opponents from a single nation with losing in major European competition (level with France, Bulgaria and Türkiye). I Giallorossi’s last such home game came against Feyenoord in last season’s UEFA Europa League Quarter Final, winning 4-1 after extra-time at Stadio Olimpico.
- Feyenoord are winless across their last six away games against Italian opposition in major European competition (D1 L5), losing each of the last four; they have never lost five in a row against teams from a single nation.
- Daniele De Rossi will take charge of his first ever home game in European competition as a manager; as a player the Italian faced Feyenoord twice with both matches coming the 2014/15 UEFA Europa League Last 32, starting in both legs of a 3-2 aggregate win (1-1 home, 2-1 away).
