RB Leipzig vs Real Madrid Prediction: Attacking Impetus

Europe, Champions League, Tuesday, February 13th, 20:00 (UK)

RB Leipzig and Real Madrid meet for the first time in a Champions League knockout match. The hosts have struggled in 2024 with a single win in five Bundesliga matches. Carlo Ancelotti’s men have been tremendous this term. They’ve lost just once inside 90 minutes throughout the entire campaign.

Despite their uninspiring form, the German side has a chance at the Red Bull Arena. Marco Rose’s men have been strong when playing at home. RB Leipzig have picked up 23 points from a possible 33, scoring 28 with ten going in at the other end.

The Spanish giants won all six of their group-stage matches; their three away days saw an impressive 13 goals, with every side finding the back of the net.

Leipzig has the capability of giving their opponents problems here and will know that they’ll need to take advantage of the visitors’ absences.

I can see goals here; Rodrygo and Vinicius JR will lead the line for Real; the pair both scored in their emphatic 4-0 win over Girona at the weekend. The Brazilian duo will thrive, given they’re up against a defence that hasn’t kept a single clean sheet in their previous 13 Bundesliga matches. Rose’s men failed to keep a shutout in any of their six group matches despite facing Red Star and Young Boys.

I’m siding with goals here. Lois Openda is in fine form, having scored in each of his previous four outings. There’s plenty of attacking talent on show, and I’m confident they’ll have joy over one another’s defence on Tuesday night.

Leipzig vs Real Madrid Team News and Possible Lineups:

Real Madrid has several players out with injuries, such as Alaba, Courtois, Militao and, most notably, Jude Bellingham. Antonio Rudiger is also a doubt. We could see the visitors start with a makeshift central defence once again. Against Girona, Carvajal and Tchouameni started as the two in the heart of the defence.

Haidara missed RB Leipzig’s Augsburg clash on the weekend and faces a race against time to be fit for Real MAdrid’s visit. It’s likely this one comes too soon for him which is a blow.

RB Leipzig possible starting lineup:
Gulasci; Henrichs, Klostermann, Orban, Raum, Kampl, Schlager, Olmo, Simons, Sesko; Openda

Real Madrid possible starting lineup:
Lunin; Vazquez, Carvajal, Tchouameni, Mendy, Valverde, Kroos, Camavinga, Diaz, Vini JR; Rodrygo

Match OPTA Stats: Real Madrid enter with a 100% record

  • Real Madrid have lost just one of their last 15 UEFA Champions League matches against German sides (W10 D4), though that was a 3-2 loss at RB Leipzig in last season’s competition. They’ve not been eliminated by German opponents since the 2012-13 semi-final against Borussia Dortmund.
  • RB Leipzig haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last 13 UEFA Champions League home games, since beating Istanbul Basaksehir 2-0 in October 2020. • Loïs Openda has scored four goals for RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League this season, with only Christopher Nkunku (7 in 2021-22) ever netting more in a single campaign for the German side.
