Manchester United vs Fulham: Subtle Improvements at Old Trafford
England, Premier League, Friday, 16th August, 20:00 (UK)
Manchester United played well in the Community Shield last weekend but came up short. Erik Ten Hag has since added two more players to his squad as they attempt to avoid the injury crisis that derailed last season but will it be enough for the Red Devils to finish in the top four?
Fulham recorded a rare win at Old Trafford this season. Marco Silva’s team will have no fear ahead of this Friday night clash with it being a golden opportunity to start the season by making a statement.
The Red Devils’ flawed tactical setup last season led to the team conceding an exorbitant amount of shots but there are signs that some of those issues have been addressed. They restricted Manchester City to just nine shots at Wembley last weekend and looked far more cohesive out of possession.
Fulham managed 17 shots in this fixture last season but it was the first time that they had exceeded the 12 attempts mark at Old Trafford since returning to the Premier League in 2018. They had an average of 11.24 shots in the four league meetings at this ground.
- Selection: Under 13.5 Shots For Fulham (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 1.72
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 8/10
Ipswich vs Liverpool: The Home Crowd Can Play Their Part
England, Premier League, Saturday, 17th August, 12:30 (UK)
Ipswich are back in the Premier League for the first time since 2002. There will be a jubilant atmosphere at Portman Road when they welcome the 19-time champions of England in Saturday’s early kick-off. Survival is the aim this season after securing back-to-back promotions from League One.
Jurgen Klopp has left a huge void at Liverpool but the early indications are that Arne Slot is capable of stepping up. The former Feyenoord boss has already started to implement his style of play.
It’s difficult to gauge just how Ipswich will fare in their first game against Liverpool but expect to see plenty of attacking intent. They have more shots than any other side in the Championship last season with an average of 15.63. The home crowd will be willing their side to get at their famous guests and it should mean they get a decent number of attempts.
Liverpool are still adjusting to the new manager’s philosophy and while they should have enough to secure all three points, there will be moments of fragility. The Reds conceded an average of 12.89 shots per away game in the league last season and we are backing the home side to get around that.
- Selection: Over 10.5 Shots For Ipswich (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 2.00
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 7/10
Nottingham Forest vs Bournemouth: The Cherries Can Rack up the Shots
England, Premier League, Saturday, 17th August, 15:00 (UK)
Nottingham Forest rolled the dice by sacking Steve Cooper and bringing in Nuno Espirito Santo last season and it had the desired effect. The team live to fight another day in the Premier League but there is a lot of work to be done.
Andoni Iraola made a slow start to life at Bournemouth last season leading many to question why Gary O’Neil was sacked. However, things quickly turned around and the Cherries had a hugely successful season. Dominic Solanke is a huge loss but there is plenty of reason for Iraola to be optimistic.
Forest conceded 18 shots in this fixture last season. Nuno hadn’t been in the dugout for long at that stage but it doesn’t bode well. Nottingham conceded an average of 13.42 shots per game last season.
Bournemouth had the 9th highest xG in the league last season with 63.76 and this meant they also averaged 14.26 shots per game. This dropped to 14.5 if we only include the data from their away games but that’s still above the line set by bet365 here.
- Selection: Over 12.5 Shots For Bournemouth (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 1.80
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 7/10
West Ham vs Aston Villa: Emery Won’t Throw Away Possession
England, Premier League, Saturday, 17th August, 17:30 (UK)
Saturday’s late game sees West Ham host Aston Villa. This will be Julen Lopetegui’s first game in charge of the Hammers as he looks to get the team challenging amongst the European places once more. The club have spent big in the transfer window but they will face stiff competition.
Aston Villa’s plethora of signings means they are well-equipped to deal with the longer format of the Champions League. They finished 4th last season to earn a place in Europe’s elite club competition for the first time since 1983 when they were the holders.
Throws continued to decrease in number in the Premier League overall last season with an average of 35.33. 2.62 fewer than the 2022/23 campaign. There were 29 and 24 throws in West Ham’s clashes with Aston Villa.
Only Manchester City and Brighton matches saw fewer throws than Aston Villa’s last season. Unai Emery likes his team to play through the opposition press and move the ball around calmly. This resulted in his team’s matches seeing 29.5 throws on average.
- Selection: Under 31.5 Throws In The Match (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 1.80
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 8/10
Brentford vs Crystal Palace: The Eagles Soar Above the Rest in Tackle Table
England, Premier League, Sunday, 18th August, 14:00 (UK)
Brentford struggled last season but relegation was never really a possibility. They amassed a total of 39 points, which was enough to keep them above the relegation zone by 13 points. However, Thomas Frank will have been disappointed that they finished behind an Everton side that were docked eight points.
Oliver Glasner had a huge impact when he joined Crystal Palace last season. He steered the team well clear of the bottom three and is looking to build on that this season. The loss of Michael Olise is sure to be hard felt but the results in pre-season are encouraging.
The last time Brentford squared off with Crystal Palace, there were 37 tackles in the match but there have been significant changes at Selhurst Park since then.
Crystal Palace matches have ranked highly for tackles in recent years and that’s been particularly true since Glasner came in. The Eagles’ matches in the league last season overall saw 40.39 tackles on average. This increases to 41.46 if we only include the games with the new manager at the helm.
- Selection: Over 37.5 Tackles In The Match (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 1.83
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 7/10
Chelsea vs Manchester City: The Apprentice Tackles the Master
England, Premier League, Sunday, 18th August, 16:30 (UK)
Enzo Maresca will take on his former mentor in his first competitive fixture as Chelsea manager. Maresca was part of Pep Guradiola’s backroom staff when Manchester City won the treble. He is now tasked with taking the Blues back to the pinnacle of English and European football after a couple of seasons in the doldrums.
Manchester City saw several key players return to training at the start of this week ahead of the Premier League season. They managed to win the Community Shield without those who went deeper into Euro 2024 with their country but Pep will be relieved to have them available here.
Under Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea matches saw an average of 36.79 tackles. While there will be some changes to the approach under Maresca, the Blues should remain proactive when out of possession.
Tackles were scarce in Manchester City games last season with the 30.39 average in their matches being the fewest in the division. However, this wasn’t true of their three encounters with Chelsea. There were 38 and 43 tackles in their league meetings and 37 when the sides went toe-to-toe in the FA Cup.
- Selection: Over 32.5 Tackles In The Match (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 1.83
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 8/10
