Gary Pallister believes Premier League title is Liverpool’s to lose
The Arne Slot Penitentiary is showing no signs of letting anyone out as Girona were added to the list last night. The Reds have won all six of their Champions League games so far and currently sit atop the Premier League table with a four point cushion, and a game in hand.
Slot’s men have caught fans and analysts by surprise and Manchester United legend Gary Pallister is the latest to admit that. We spoke with the four-time Premier League winner who was full of praise for the Reds and reserved special praise for their captain, Virgil van Dijk.
Title is Liverpool’s to lose
Pallister’s long-term affiliation with Manchester United makes him begrudgingly admit that the Premier League title is now Liverpool’s to lose. He points to the small margin for error nowadays in the league and believes that only an implosion will prevent the Reds from winning it.
“Liverpool have put themselves in such a strong position. You’re looking to get 100 points now to win a Premier League and you can only afford to drop maybe two or three points. “
“I hate to say it’s Liverpool’s to lose but they’ve put themselves in such a strong position they’d have to implode and struggle in the second half of the season.”
“Whatever Arne Slot’s done to reinvigorate the team, he’s got it perfectly right. He’s had the Mo Salah issue to deal with which he’s handled well.”
Liverpool’s biggest strength has been Virgil van Dijk
Mohamed Salah is the one putting the ball in the net for Slot’s Reds but in Pallister’s view, Liverpool’s key player has been Virgil van Dijk who he calls a ‘Rolls-Royce’ defender.
Considering that Liverpool have the best defensive record in the league, Pallister makes a compelling point.
“The biggest thing for Liverpool is getting Virgil van Dijk back to his superior best. I think he struggled the year after doing his cruciate which isn’t surprising as you have to get the confidence back in the leg and the belief that it can still do what it used to do.”
“He’s back to his imperious best and I think he’s such a pivotal figure for Liverpool when he’s playing like that. He’s a Rolls Royce of a defender and it would be hard to look past Liverpool for the title.”
