New York Red Bulls vs Cincinnati Preview
Thursday, July 13th, 00:30 (UK)
The New York Red Bulls started their 22/23 MLS season in underwhelming circumstances. NYRB earned just nine points from the opening 11 matches which resulted in Gerhard Struber losing his job.
Fast forward nine weeks and ten fixtures later, the club is in a stronger position but still have work to do, especially if they’re eyeing up a playoff spot. Troy Lesesne has seen his side accumulate 17 points since his arrival but lacks consistency. They’re yet to win back-to-back matches in the current league campaign.
The visitors have a comfortable lead at the top of the table. That’s largely down to their remarkable home results, which earned them 31 points from a possible 33. Pat Noonan’s side has fallen to defeat just twice across 21 matchdays, half the amount of the next best, with their away record reading as 3-5-2 (WDL).
As we look closer at the markets, seeing the NYRB priced up at odds-on favourites is surprising. It’s clear that home advantage is a significant factor within this competition; however, the price does feel a little short, given the circumstances.
Scoring goals has proven to be a tricky test for the home side. They’ve found the back of the net just 20 times in their opening 21 matches, but within the last three clashes in this stadium, they’ve bagged an impressive eight (2,4,2).
Cincinnati have been consistent in attacking areas. Only five sides have scored more than the Eastern League leaders. They’ll be underdogs arriving here, priced at 3.80 at the time of writing but have notched at least once in 19 from 21 matches – an inspiring statistic.

New York Red Bulls vs Cincinnati Bet Builder
I’ve backed the bet builder bet on bet365. They provide a wide range of markets, even for the leagues outside Europe, allowing us to create various multi-layer selections. Player shots and player shots on target are a great feature and my personal favourite. And, of course, individual markets such as goalscorers and cards can also be utilised in tandem with the other offerings.
With the NYRB scoring in five of their six home matches under their current boss, you’d like to think they’ll be on the front foot at the Red Bull Arena. They lack an out-and-out goalscorer but are ranked within the middle of the pack in xG, underperforming by eight goals.
We shouldn’t underestimate Cincinnati. They’ve got themselves on the scoresheet in eight of their ten away days, with BTTS cashing on six occasions. Luciano Acosta is their star man; the Argentinian has 17 goal contributions this campaign (10 goals & 7 assists).
When looking into the card stats, it was clear that these two sides aren’t too fussed about winning any fair play award. NYRB currently average the most fouls per match across the entire MLS and have been brandished 56 yellow cards, the third most. Cincinnati are 10th when it comes to fouls and 17th for cautions.
At home, the hosts have received a card after the break in 82% of matches, with their opposition on the day also seeing the same percentage. It’s 80% when the league leaders travel – nine of their ten opponents have seen this selection land.
Given his cracking shooting stats, it would’ve been tricky to leave out Acosta from the bet builder. The 29-year-old has started 18 matches this campaign and has recorded multiple shots on 15 occasions, including each of the last 13. He’s managed a shot on target in his previous 11 matches, a really strong stat that adds to the bet builder.
At 4.00, several attractive stats boost this selection to a chunky price. Let’s hope the game is full of action in the right areas, with Acosta again contributing.
- BTTS – Yes
- Both Team Over 0.5 Second Half Cards
- Luciano Acosta Over 1.5 Shots
- Luciano Acosta Over 0.5 Shots On Target
Bet Builder odds: 4.20
Odds via bet365 as at 16:00 July 11th 2023. Odds may now differ.
