Armenia vs Ukraine Preview
UEFA, Nations League, Saturday, September 24th, 14:00 (UK)
Armenia have risen from League D to League B following successive promotions. But they are at risk of being relegated back to the third tier as a result of three consecutive defeats. A win here in Yerevan could lift Joaquín Caparrós’ side off the foot of the table. Three points will at least keep their fate in their own hands travelling to Dublin on Tuesday. To do that, the Mountaineers must gain revenge for a 3-0 defeat in the reverse fixture with Ukraine in June.
Following a devastating World Cup play-off defeat to Wales, Oleksandr Petrakov’s men bounced back with a solid start to this National League campaign. However, Wednesday night saw a late 3-0 collapse to Scotland. With their hosts leapfrogging them into the top spot in the group. It was an unusually flat performance from the Blue and Yellows, who will look to respond in a positive fashion here.
Armenia vs Ukraine Best Bet
Motivation for both sides to win should lead to at least one side searching for a goal for the duration of this match. Ukraine are unbeaten in every meeting with Armenia, winning six.
The hosts scored the opening goal in each of their last six home games in this competition, which would be the perfect scenario on Saturday. Furthermore, the threat of Yarmolenko, Yaremchuk and Mudryk is expected to lead to more attacking potency. Scotland scored four in Armenia’s most recent fixture here, and goals will be on the menu once again.

Scotland vs Ireland Preview
UEFA, Nations League, Saturday, September 24th, 19:45 (UK)
On Wednesday, a richly deserved victory over Ukraine secured League B safety for Scotland. Now attention turns to the push for promotion. The win at Hampden was also a small dose of revenge, having had their World Cup dream ended by the same opponent in June. Three wins from the next four subsequent fixtures has been a fine response. More revenge is added motivation for the Tartan Army, with the one blot on that record being the 3-0 defeat in the reverse meeting at the Aviva Stadium.
That success was the Republic of Ireland’s first-ever Nations League victory at the 13th attempt. Stephen Kenny’s side still holds faint hopes of an unlikely promotion themselves. Avoiding relegation is the most likely aim. Ireland at least have the advantage of having had no midweek game. They will hope their fresh legs can add to the four points taken from the top two in the group so far.
Scotland vs Ireland Best Bet
Scotland were very impressive in the defeat of Ukraine. For more composed finishing and a little more luck could have ended with an even wider margin of victory. Their home record since this tournament’s inception is equally eye-catching. Unbeaten at Hampden, winning six of their seven fixtures.
The hosts also have the ability to rotate some quality into their side to freshen things up. I was surprised to see them at odds-against in a game they will be very much up for winning.
- Selection: Scotland to win
- Best Odds: 2.05 (William Hill)
- Stakes: 7/10
Serbia vs Sweden Preview
UEFA, Nations League, Saturday, September 24th, 19:45 (UK)
Serbia need to win both remaining fixtures to stand a chance of promotion to the top tier. A trip to Oslo on Tuesday awaits in what could be a winner takes all clash. But first, the Eagles must overcome a Sweden side they defeated in Stockholm in June. The Serbs should be full of confidence. They have won six of their last ten home games scoring at least three goals in each of those victories. Having qualified for the upcoming World Cup, there is extra motivation for the players featuring here, knowing a strong performance could guarantee them a place on the plane to Qatar.
In contrast, Sweden are in a rut. Three successive competition defeats have followed an opening round victory over Slovenia. That leaves Janne Andersson’s men just one point off the bottom of this group. A run of five defeats in their last six away games doesn’t bode well.
Serbia vs Sweden Best Bet
Serbia manager Dragan Stojković described 20-year-old Stefan Mitrović as “the future of Serbian football”. However, it is another Mitrović that forms my bet in this clash.
It was Aleksandar Mitrović’s last-gasp header against Portugal in Lisbon that secured Serbia’s World Cup place. The 28-Year-Old striker is in great form for Fulham in the Premier League, scoring six goals in seven outings – hitting the back of the net in five of those fixtures. He also likes this competition, having scored ten times in 13 appearances. So, I am taking him to add to his tally in a must-win game for his nation against out-of-sorts opponents.
- Selection: Aleksandar Mitrović to score
- Best Odds: 2.38 (SkyBet)
- Stakes: 5/10
