Napoli vs Roma Prediction: Team News and Lineups Preview
A last chance for the Neapolitans to chase qualification for next season’s Champions League? Our Italian football expert, Daniele Fisichella, has prepared Napoli vs Roma prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview.
Prediction: Napoli 1-2 Roma
The next two weeks will define the Giallorossi’s season and although Daniele De Rossi’s men have their eyes on reaching the third consecutive European final, they can’t take the foot of the gas in Serie A just yet with Atalanta, in sixth place, breathing down their neck.

Napoli vs Roma Prediction 1: misfiring hosts are under pressure
Italy, Serie A, Sunday, April 28th, 17:00 (UK)
At the weekend, Napoli continued to struggle to find consistency (only one win in the last six) and handed vital points to another team at the bottom of the table, Empoli this time, after the 2-2 draw against Frosinone a fortnight ago.
There’s little to get excited about Napoli this season but, if anything, last year’s champions are contributing to keep alive the race to avoid relegation.
However their hopes to play next season in Europe, albeit in the Conference League, seem very low.
Franco Calzona’s side continue to concede extremely cheap goals, often the result of hopeful and simple crosses, and seem inoffensive going forward.
Napoli haven’t kept a clean sheet in 12 league games (since 28 January, 0-0 against Lazio when Walter Mazzarri was still the manager) and have only won one of their last six matches in all competitions at the ‘Stadio Maradona”.
The hosts are top in Serie A for ball possession but their territorial domination is often utterly sterile.
In fact, they’ve scored 29 fewer goals than leaders Inter and last Saturday against Empoli, they finished the first half with 71% possession but only one shot against the Tuscans’ six.
- Napoli vs Roma Prediction 1: Over 1 Goal In The First Half Asian Line (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 1.82
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 10/10
Napoli vs Roma Prediction 2: a tight, intense, schedule for the Giallorossi
Napoli have been looking, in vain, for last seasons’ swagger since August whereas Daniele De Rossi’s arrival on the Giallorossi bench has galvanized the visitors.
Unlike under Josè Mourinho, Roma are now a team that does not wait for the opponents to make the first move in the match and attacks with a greater sense of purpose.
The results have backed up De Rossi’s choices and some of his tactical tweaks to a formation that often presents at least four attacking players.
Monday’s defeat against Bologna is understandable, given the calibre of the opposition and the fact Roma has had a very intense run of fixtures.
Moreover, they’ve not been helped by Italy’s FA decisions to make them play the remaining 20 odd minutes of the game against Udinese, which was suspended due to Evan N’Dicka collapsing on the floor, on Wednesday.
Roma protested loudly as it meant this trip to Napoli had to be moved to Sunday afternoon giving them one less rest day before the Europa League tie against Bayer Leverkusen.
- Napoli vs Roma Prediction 2: Both Teams To Score – Yes (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 1.75
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 8/10
Napoli vs Roma Prediction 3: Hard to trust Osimhen & co at home
The discontent probably filtered through Roma’s players, who looked extremely irritable (they received five bookings) during the 3-1 defeat against Bologna.
It was only the second league game the visitors have lost in the last 12, as De Rossi’s man-management skills will be further tested ahead of a crucial period.
Roma have only won five away league games this season and Napoli’s record at home is very poor (they’re 11th in the home table, with fewer points and goals scored than Cagliari).
But, after seeing off AC Milan in the Europa League, the visitors seem a stronger and more cohesive side, with more tactical discipline, whereas Calzona’s team still depends too much on the stroke of genius of some of their top players.
Roma have only failed to score four times away from home in Serie A this season whereas Napoli have obtained the three points in just one (2-1 against Juventus) of the seven home matches they played against top sides.
Both Teams To Score – Yes would have been a winning bet in 12 out of 16 Napoli’s home games.
- Napoli vs Roma Prediction 3: Match Result: Draw Or Roma (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 1.90
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 7/10

Napoli vs Roma Team News and Possible Lineups: a chance from the start for Azmoun
Mario Rui and Rrahmani return from suspension and will start in Napoli’s back four with Juan Jesus and captain Di Lorenzo. Calzona should confirm the same midfield and front line that lost in Empoli, and the only doubt is between Zielinksi and Traore’ Hj. Olivera is out till the end of the month due to injury.
Roma are without Llorente and Paredes (both suspended) as well as N’Dicka and Lukaku, injured. The Belgian might be fit enough to make the bench, but could be rested ahead of Thursday’s game.
Azmoun, who scored against Bologna, is expected to start upfront alongside Dybala with Bove and Huijsen also coming into the 4-3-3 formation.
Napoli possible starting lineup:
Meret; Di Lorenzo, Rrahmani, Juan Jesus, Mario Rui; Zambo Anguissa, Lobotka, Zielinski; Politano, Osimhen, Kvaratskhelia.
Roma possible starting lineup:
Svilar; Karsdorp, Mancini, Huijsen, Angelino; Bove, Cristante, Pellegrini; Dybala, Azmoun, El-Shaarawy.
