Monaco vs PSG Tip 1: Hosts carry strong scoring threat
France, Ligue 1, Friday 1st March, 20:00 (UK)
Monaco is not a team that I fully trust, and the key is to get them in the right spot and moments. Last week, it was good to win with the principality side on a DNB handicap away to Lens, with Minamino scoring a late goal to earn them a thrilling 3-2 victory.
That match rather sums up Monaco in a nutshell: They carry plenty of offensive threats but can’t be relied upon defensively. I think the best value bet in this match is for the home team to score over 1.5 goals at a juicy odds-against price. This isn’t the sort of fixture in which Monaco will lie down, and I expect them to put some pressure on PSG.
Monaco has scored at least two goals in 16 of their 23 Ligue 1 games this season, which demonstrates their firepower. The likes of Balogun, Ben Yedder, Minamino and Golovin all make up for a strong attack force, and they usually raise their game vs PSG, scoring three times in all of the last three meetings vs them at this venue.
PSG’s defence is hardly impenetrable, keeping just two clean sheets in their last nine games, and one of those contained a missed penalty by the opposition. With a Champions League game on the horizon, PSG could be distracted. As a bare minimum, I expect Monaco to net twice past the reigning champions.
- Monaco vs PSG Tip 1: Monaco Over 1.5 Goals (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 2.20
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 10/10
Monaco vs PSG Tip 2: Monaco can profit from PSG distraction
Once again, I am going to have faith in Monaco, which feels very uncomfortable. Les Monegasques are not a team that I trust, and they are a side that I think most people vastly overrate. They were lucky to beat Lens last week but have plenty of offensive weapons that can save their skin and individual performers who can beat anyone on the day.
This is a nice spot for them to play against PSG. The runaway league leaders are 11 points clear at the summit of the table, but nobody below is putting any pressure on them. Even if they lost to Monaco here, the gap would be, at worst, ten points to the south coast outfit, so there is no immediate need for PSG to produce their best stuff. The capital club knows that barring a freakish set of circumstances, they will be champions again, so Luis Enrique can switch his focus to Europe.
On Tuesday, PSG faces a trip to the Basque Country to face Real Sociedad. They hold a 2-0 advantage but have performed badly on the road this season in the Champions League. It’s a tough place to go, and Luis Enrique will be well aware that there will be times they have to dig in next week and grind out the result. The priority focus and attention will be on the trip to Spain, so PSG could be distracted mentally. There’s also the chance of some rest and rotation in preparation.
It’s a perfect time to face PSG, so I think Monaco can be backed on the Asian Handicap +0.5 line and avoid defeat. They have a tremendous recent H2H record vs PSG at this venue, beating them at Le Stade Louis II on the last three occasions. This fixture is one of the few times that this stadium feels alive, and Monaco usually plays their best football against PSG. It’s tough on the stomach to trust Monaco two weeks in a row, but this looks like the right bet, considering the circumstances.
- Monaco vs PSG Tip 2: Monaco +0.5 Asian Handicap (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 1.84
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 8/10
Monaco vs PSG Tip 3: This fixture should be an obvious hot-spot for goals
It doesn’t take Einstein to work out there’s a good chance of this being a high-scoring encounter. Both sides rank in the top three for over 2.5 goal games in Ligue 1, and fixtures involving each team average 3.40 and 3.20 goals, respectively.
This matchup is rarely a cagey affair and contains two teams with big egos who will have a proper go at each other. It is not in Monaco’s DNA to be cautious and passive vs PSG, which immediately leads towards an open style of contest. The Over 3 Asian goal line has plenty of appeal and feels like at least a push is possible from it.
Monaco hasn’t kept a clean sheet in any of their last nine league games and cannot be relied upon defensively. Whichever combination of attack Luis Enrique uses, they will get chances, and the likelihood is that PSG will score multiple goals. I have already mentioned with my first pick for the game that I strongly like Monaco to net at least twice here.
Unless a glutton of chances are missed or the goalkeepers lay on sensational displays, then there’s absolutely no reason why Over 3 Asian goals doesn’t land. Nothing is pointing towards a tight or cagey contest, and the goals could flow in the Principality.
- Monaco vs PSG Tip 3: Over 3 Asian Goals (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 1.85
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 9/10
