Marseille vs Metz Tip 1: Marseille should keep clean sheet vs toothless Metz
France, Ligue1, Friday 9th February, 20:00 (UK)
Neither team heads into this game in good form. Marseille has struggled desperately in January, although most of their AFCON players have now returned, which is a boost. OM remains unbeaten at home with six wins and four draws at Le Stade Velodrome. They aren’t particularly trustworthy right now, but they should logically have too much for Metz and get the job done. Taking Marseille on a -1.5 Asian handicap might be dicing with death, though, so I prefer backing ‘win to nil’ at similar odds.
Metz are a team who have struggled for goals all season. Only Clermont have scored less, and they average the fewest shots on target of any team in the division. Metz have the lowest xG of any side (15.04), and Marseille must surely fancy their chances of keeping a clean sheet. The visitors acquired former player Georges Mikautadze on loan from Ajax, but he has yet to make a significant impact. Marseille have the third-best defensive record at home in Ligue 1, so taking a win to nil has some appeal. Something like 2-0 or 3-0 is very possible, but this bet also covers that dangerous 1-0 potential.
- Marseille vs Metz Tip 1: Marseille to Win to Nil (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 1.95
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 9/10
Marseille vs Metz Tip 2: Hosts to control the game in both halves
Marseille have been winning at half-time in six of their ten home games this season and only found themselves behind on a solitary occasion. They’ve had a poor few weeks, so the expectation from their fans will force them to come out strong in the first period. They can’t afford to be playing at a pedestrian pace and lacking intensity. The HT/FT combo has some appeal as long as Marseille gets out of the traps well.
Metz have a strong record of draws at HT, with 11 of their 20 contests being all square at the interval. They managed to hold on to a 0-0 HT result away to Nice recently, and their strategy is likely to be quite defensive on the south coast. It’s a tough call whether to go Marseille HT/FT or Draw/Marseille, but because the home team are under pressure and needs a response. I would back them to have enough in the first 45 minutes to get their noses in front. Should that happen, then the full-time result is highly likely to occur as well.
- Marseille vs Metz Tip 2: Marseille HT/FT (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 1.95
- Bookmaker: Bet365
- Stake: 8/10
Marseille vs Metz Tip 3: Aubameyang the most likely to net for OM
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had a really hot streak just before Christmas. He has gone a bit quiet since, but I think he remains the best goalscorer option for this match. Marseille signed Cameroonian striker Faris Moumbagna from Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt in the January transfer window for over £8m. That move should keep Aubameyang on his toes, although the new man is being gradually worked into the team.
Aubameyang remains the #1 option for now and should be on penalty duty. He scored against Monaco in the most recent home game and is likely to get several chances against such a poor team like Metz. It’s a surprise to see him priced so big to hit the back of the net at odds of 2.37. There was an expectation that he would be closer to evens in such a fixture. Even with Moumbagna now sniffing around, it’s likely he’ll play the full 90 mins unless Marseille are cruising, in which case he’s probably scored anyway.
- Marseille vs Metz Tip 3: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Score Anytime (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 2.37
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 8/10

Marseille vs Metz Team News and Possible Lineups: AFCON players back in contention
January was a rough month for Marseille and they had as many as seven players missing to AFCON duty. Only key defender Chancel Mbemba is now absent which massively helps their cause. Metz should have a clean bill of health with nobody of significance set to miss out.
Marseille possible starting lineup:
Lopez, Merlin, Gigot, Balerdi, Clauss, Harit, Ounahi, Onana, Ndiaye, Sarr, Aubameryang
Metz possible starting lineup:
Oukidja, Udol, Cande, Traore, Colin, N’Doram, Lamkel Ze, Camara, Jean-Jaques, Van Den Kerkhof, Mikautadze
