Luton vs Sheffield United Tip 1: Blades Mad as Hatters
England, Premier League, Saturday, February 10th, 15:00 (UK)
Luton started the season as 1.36 relegation favourites. Sheffield United were your next best bet at 1.67, and up until very recently, the pair remained the most likely to go down odds-wise.
It looks like the bookies have given up on the Blades’ survival hopes. Paddy Power has them at 1.01 for the drop, but the Hatters are right amongst them at 2.50.
The two clubs went in different directions on Boxing Day. They spent Christmas only three points apart before their game at Bramall Lane.
Despite trailing with 13 minutes left and not having a shot from that point onwards, Luton came from 2-1 down to win 3-2 thanks to two own goals.
Those three points hoisted Luton to within two of safety and left Sheffield United eight adrift.
Chris Wilder’s side has only taken one point from the 12 on offer since, whilst Luton has only lost one of their last seven games.
The desperate direction the visitor’s season has taken has made for chaotic games; over 2.5 goals clicked in reverse (5 goals) and five of the six games since, with 27 goals scored across that period.
- Luton vs Sheffield UnitedTip 1: Over 2.5 Goals (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 1.80
- Bookmaker: William Hill
- Stake: 10/10
Luton vs Sheffield UnitedTip 2: American Express
The magnitude of this clash cannot be understated. Defeat for the Blades puts them 13 points from safety, all but condemning them to a return to the Championship, so I expect them to come out swinging.
Sheffield United have picked up the second most cards in the division (69Y and 3R) are averaging 2.6 per game since Wilder’s return, and have won the card count in six of his 11 games.
Under his tutelage, Auston Trusty has been carded three times in nine appearances and at 4.00, the defender looks a great price to add to that tally at Kenilworth Road.
Trusty averages 1.9 tackles and commits 0.7 fouls per game and has fluctuated between playing on the left-hand side of a back three or at left back in a four. In his last four appearances at full-back, he has completed 11 tackles and committed six fouls.
With the Blades needing a win, Wilder could opt for a more attacking approach that would see Trusty start at left back, but either way, the American should be opposing Chiedozie Ogbene.
The Irish international is Luton’s most fouled player (1.6), drawing 13 in his last three starts at wing-back.
Ogbene terrorised Dan Burn at St James’ Park with his blistering pace. Ogbene won a penalty, and Burn was booked, becoming the second direct opponent to be carded against Ogbene in as many games, joining Brighton’s Igor Julio.
- Luton vs Sheffield United Tip 2: Auston Trusty Card (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 4.00
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 10/10
Luton vs Sheffield United Tip 3: Creator-in-chief
Alfie Doughty has recently emerged as Luton’s creator-in-chief. The wingback tops their charts for assists with five, four of which have come in his last eight starts, and he has also found the net over that period.
Doughty also tops the Hatters charts for key passes (passes leading to shots), posting 1.80 per game, sharing that average with the likes of Bernardo Silva of Manchester City and Tottenham’s Son Heung-min.
In 18 league starts this term, Doughty has registered at least one key pass all bar two matches, hitting highs of four vs Chelsea, five vs Wolves, six vs Everton and seven vs Burnley, underpinning how creative the Englishman is.
Luton are odds on to score at least two goals, upspringing considering Sheff Utd conceding 15 in their last four, and if the Hatters do find the net on Saturday, you would imagine Doughty to be involved in some capacity.
- Luton vs Sheffield United Tip 3: Alfie Doughty Assist (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 4.00
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 10/10

Luton vs Sheffield United Team News and Possible Lineups: Mark Barkley’s Card
Ross Barkley sparkled again in the eight-goal thriller at St James’ Park last weekend, scoring and setting up Elijah Adebayo for the four-goal.
Luton came through that clash relatively unscathed, so Rob Edwards could name the same XI as last weekend, which would see Barkely continue in midfield, Adebayo upfront supported by Carlton Morris and Ogbene and Doughty at win back.
Sheffield United were without January signing Ivo Grbic due to concussion protocol against Aston Villa. The keeping should return at the weekend ahead of Wes Foderingham.
Wilder made five changes for the 5-0 thumping. Ollie McBurnie was left out with a thigh strain but should return to lead the line.
Luton possible starting lineup:
Kiminski; Mengi, Osho, Bell; Ogbene, Lokonga, Barkley, Doughty; Clar, Morris; Adebayo
Sheffield United possible starting lineup:
Brbic; Bogle, Ahmedhodzic, Robinson, Trusty; Souza, McAtee, Hamer, Brooks, Brereton; McBurnie

Match Stats: Seismic scrap at the bottom
- Sheffield United have lost 29 of their last 35 away Premier League matches (W2 D4). Across those 35 games, the Blades have only scored twice in two games, but one of those was last time out on the road in their 3-2 loss at Crystal Palace.
- Luton’s Alfie Doughty has taken more corners that have led to a goal (not necessarily providing the assist himself) in the Premier League this season than any other player (8).
- Sheffield United’s Oliver McBurnie has more goals and assists combined than any other Blades player in the Premier League this season (4 goals, 2 assists), although he hasn’t ended on the winning side in any game he’s scored or assisted in.
- Luton are unbeaten in four home league games against Sheffield United (W1 D3) since a 6-3 loss in December 1994. The Hatters won the last time they hosted the Blades in the top-flight, 2-1 in February 1992.
