Selection 1: Cheltenham Town v Wigan Athletic Best Bet
The billing
An Andy Liddell tap-in and a Lee McCullough header gave Wigan a 2-0 opening day victory the last time these sides met at Whaddon Road, back in 2002-03. That year, the Tics won promotion from the third tier and the Robins went down – will history repeat itself?
Hosts’ form
Cheltenham have gone nine games without a win after the 1-0 loss at Rotherham last time out, which leaves fans with a sense of trepidation, with only a four-point buffer from the drop zone.
Much of the run can be mitigated by a combination of promising performance levels and tough opposition, but the games do not get much easier – Sunderland, Wycombe and Ipswich are faced not long after the visit of the leaders – and the Robins will need to try to upset the odds in one of those games.
Visitors’ form
“Would you rather have the points or the games in hand?” It’s a moot question that depends so much on the specifics, but Wigan no longer have to choose.
The Latics, remarkably, are top of League One despite having played two fewer games than everyone else in the division.
The Tactics Board
Cheltenham must find the means to nullify Wigan controller Graeme Shinnie so as to force their makeshift full-backs, Max Power and Graeme Shinnie, high up the pitch.
Do that successfully and Michael Duff’s side can release energetic forwards Dan N’Lundulu and Alfie May into the channels, in order to gain a foothold higher up the field.
Prediction & Best Bet
Cheltenham look underrated with the Double Chance option at 1.91, which will land if Duff’s troops avoid defeat.
Selection 2: Doncaster Rovers vs Plymouth Best Bet
The billing
Can Adam Clayton solidify Doncaster in time to stop Play-Off chasers Plymouth Argyle?
Hosts’ form
Donny have added Clayton on an 18-month from Birmingham this month, either for free or a nominal fee.
The 33-year-old does not have the legs to be the tough-tackler he once was, but retains impeccable defensive awareness, discipline and organisational qualities.
On-loan duo Ethan Galbraith and Matt Smith are both capable of bringing a more energetic, dynamic element to the midfield, which means Rovers can afford to have a holding midfielder in Clayton who will not get about the pitch much.
Plus, the former Middlesbrough promotion-winner comes into a side that has just recorded a vital 1-0 victory at promotion-chasing MK Dons, which Gary McSheffrey hopes can spark a resurgence.
Visitors’ form
Argyle were moments away from securing victory at Fleetwood in midweek, having led by two goals with two minutes of normal time to play, but ended up drawing 3-3.
At a late stage, Steven Schumacher made the brave decision to replace midfielder Panutche Camara with more of an unknown quantity in Alfie Lewis, who joined on a free this month, but it’s one that did not quite pay off for the Devon club, now two points off the Play-Offs.
The Tactics Board
If Clayton comes into the side, his job will be to stay between the ball and visiting striker Luke Jephcott, who remains the away side’s biggest goal threat.
Argyle have athletes like Camara, Ryan Broom and Jordan Garrick, whom Clayton will not be able to keep up with, but the veteran will help keep the shape for the hosts and stop their opponents from creating big chances for their goal-getter.
Prediction & Best Bet
Clayton can help Doncaster to another clean sheet, and record a narrow victory: a Donny win and Under 2.5 goals can be backed at 9.50.

Selection 3: Lincoln City vs Burton Best Bet
The billing
It would not be a huge surprise if Lincoln and Burton were to swap places between now and the end of the season – but the Brewers are out to prove they are in the top half on merit.
Hosts’ form
Lincoln boss Michael Appleton could be forgiven for feeling that he was not properly backed in the summer, when the only striker brought in was Southampton loanee Dan N’Lundulu, who spent much of his stint at Sincil Bank struggling with injury.
This January, though, the Imps have pepped up the attack by adding Liam Cullen and Morgan Whittaker on loan from Swansea, plus John Marquis from Portsmouth and Ben House from Eastleigh.
Visitors’ form
Burton were denied a point in midweek by a 95th-minute goal that might have felt cruel, but equally it would be hard to say they deserved anything more on general play.
Nonetheless, the Brewers remain on track for a top half finish with a respectable 10 points from their last six games.
The Tactics Board
Marquis might not have cut it at Portsmouth, where the style of football and being played out of position at times could be used as mitigating factors, but he was previously top goalscorer for three consecutive seasons at Doncaster – including in a top six finish at this level in 2018-19.
A fit, hungry, confident and motivated version of Marquis represents a threat to everyone in League One, and the evidence is that Lincoln have got just that, after the striker scored in the 2-1 victory at Plymouth Argyle last time out.
Prediction & Best Bet
The only reason Lincoln are not odds-on for victory in this match and instead 2.15 is because they have not had this array of options up top all season. If they had, they would be much higher in League One and perhaps the odds would reflect that.
Selection 4: Wycombe Wanderers vs MK Dons Best Bet
The billing
A well-coached Buckinghamshire outfit with a clear playing identity looking to cement their top-six berth faces… a well-coached Buckinghamshire outfit with a clear playing identity looking to cement their top-six berth.
Hosts’ form
Wycombe have received a lot of praise this season for their strong game management and preservation of leads, so to see Gareth Ainsworth’s side twice give up a lead at Morecambe and conspire to lose 3-2 was somewhat surprising.
Saturday’s game is all about the response.
Visitors’ form
Scott Twine has been arguably the best player in League One this season, with the MK Dons forward having produced so many moments of individual magic.
Twine grabbed the headlines again in the 1-0 midweek victory at Burton in the fifth minute of stoppage time: it was a result that was significant as much as deserved, given the defeat to strugglers Doncaster the previous Saturday.
The Tactics Board
Given how possession-heavy MK Dons are, Wycombe may not get as many chances as they would like to swing crosses into Adebayo Akinfenwa, the only available target man with Sam Vokes out with COVID.
Ainsworth, therefore, may drop Akinfenwa for Daryl Horgan and aim for a lively performance of diligent counter-pressing, with the aim of keeping as much pressure on the ball in the final third as possible.
Do that and MK Dons could struggle to get the ball into the feet of Ethan Robson, their deep-lying playmaker, let alone magician Twine.
Prediction & Best Bet
Wycombe may need this type of game to get back in touch with their strengths as underdogs, after the disappointment at Morecambe. The Chairboys can justify 2.20 quotes.

What is an EFL Acca?
An EFL Acca is a type of betting that involves combining several selections across different matches with one single stake. An acca or accumulator usually has at least four selections but it can include many many more. An EFL acca is one such bet that only involves matches from the EFL or English Football League, the second to the fourth tiers of English football. The benefits of an EFL acca are that the odds can be massive with a very small stake as the odds for all selections are multiplied together. Every pick needs to win or your EFL acca will lose.
