Lazio vs Bayern Munich Prediction: Bavarians to bounce back after horror show
Champions League, Round of 16 1st Leg, Wednesday, February 14th, 20:00 (UK)
After their catastrophic performance on Saturday against Leverkusen, Bayern are seriously risking to not win the Bundesliga after 11 consecutive domestic successes.
Manager Thomas Tuchel is under pressure and needs a quick response from this team. The six-time Champions League winners haven’t gone past the quarter-finals in the last three seasons, yet their away record in the competition remains impressive: they’ve only lost two (against Manchester City and Villareal) of their last 13 matches.
This is only the third time Lazio are into the knockout stages, and the task ahead of them looks ominous.
In fact, Bayern are unbeaten in the last 12 matches against Italian opposition, having won the previous five encounters (last year, they beat finalist Inter twice in the group stages).
Struggling in front of goal
The home factor was key for Maurizio Sarri’s side’s qualification: they achieved seven of their 10 points in Group E at the Stadio Olimpico, where a 95th-minute goal from goalkeeper Ivan Provedel and a late win against Celtic proved decisive. Overall, Lazio’s European campaign has been decided by fine margins as their win at Celtic Park also came in stoppage time thanks to Pedro.
This season, they have really struggled to create scoring opportunities, both in Italy (they have the 11th-best attack) and in the Champions League.
Saturday’s win at Cagliari was only the third time they managed to score more than two goals. In Europe’s top competition, Lazio has only recorded 24 attempts, the lowest tally amongst qualified teams, and averaged 46% possession; only Dortmund and Copenaghen have kept the ball less than the team from Italy’s capital.

Lazio vs Bayern Munich Team News and Possible Lineups: Bayern without a few
Alphonso Davies, Konrad Laimer, Kingsley Coman, and Serge Gnabry are all out, Bruno Sarr, and Bryan Zaragoza all missed the crunch tie with Bayer Leverkusen and remain serious doubts for the opening Round of 16 Leg in Rome.
The Italians come into the fixture after winning 3-1 over Cagliari where Ciro Immobile scored the 200th Serie A goal. After the match, Maurizio Sarri spoke about the upcoming Bayern tie, “We’re playing the Champions League match against a top-level team. It’s a very difficult match, bordering on prohibitive. But many teams would like to be in our place. I’m trying to help in every way.”
Lazio possible starting lineup:
Provedel; Lazzari, Gila, Romagnoli, Marušić; Guendouzi, Rovella, Alberto; Isaksen, Immobile, Anderson
Bayern Munich possible starting lineup:
Neuer; Mazraoui, Upamecano, Kim, Guerreiro; Kimmich, Goretzka; Müller, Musiala, Sané; Kane
Match OPTA Stats: Kane’s involvement might continue
- No player has been involved in more goals in this season’s UEFA Champions League than Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane (7 – 4 goals, 3 assists). Only in 2017-18 (9) has the English striker been involved in more in a single campaign.
- Lazio are making just their third appearance in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages, being eliminated from both of their previous such ties in the competition (1999-00 quarter-final against Valencia, 2020-21 round of 16 against Bayern Munich).
- Lazio have averaged 165 pressures in the final third per game in the UEFA Champions League this season, the most of any side. Despite those efforts to pressure, however, the Italian side have only recovered possession in the final third 23 times, which ranks 26th out of 32 teams in the competition this term.
- Joshua Kimmich has made 22 line-breaking passes in the final third to Kingsley Coman in the UEFA Champions League this season – the most from one player to a specific teammate.
