Juventus vs Napoli Tip 1: Mazzarri’s baptism of fire continues
On Sunday, Napoli suffered their fourth Serie A defeat of the season. Worryingly the champions have now lost as many games as they did in the previous campaign, and all these negative results have come at the Maradona.
Have Napoli already surrendered their Scudetto defence? With 25 games to go, even a gap like 11 points from Inter Milan could be dramatically reduced, but, at the moment, Napoli needs to seriously look over their shoulder with Fiorentina and Bologna only a couple of points adrift.
Walter Mazzarri, in his first three games of his second spell in charge of Napoli, hasn’t yet had the luxury to play against a weaker opponent; however, the team has responded well to adversities and the change on the bench.
Of course, Napoli drew a blank against Inter Milan but were denied one (or more) goal by an outstanding performance from Yann Sommer and hit the bar when the score was still level through Matteo Politano.
The Azzurri also attacked well against Atalanta and at the Santiago Bernabeu and it looks like they’re rediscovering their confidence and style of play that seemed to have vanished under Rudi Garcia’s tumultuous tenure.

Juventus vs Napoli Tip 2: Lack of European football is helping Juve
Napoli have only lost one away game (against Real Madrid) this season, but Juventus are undefeated in Turin and have only lost three home matches (one against Napoli, back in April) in the calendar year. Last week, Massimiliano Allegri’s side went top of the league for 48 hours thanks to their second win of the campaign in stoppage time.
This season, Juventus are showing a never-say-die attitude that reminds onlookers of their golden days under Marcello Lippi, but, most importantly, the fact they’re not playing any European competition gives them an advantage. They often looked fresher than their opponents towards the end of games: in fact, they’ve scored five times in the last 15 minutes of games and, at times, have defended deep without conceding many opportunities.
Should they keep in touch with Inter Milan come March, having played fewer games during the season could be a decisive factor.
But first, Juve needs to make sure they win this vital outing to avoid handing their direct rivals (who host Udinese) the opportunity to run away.
Napoli have struggled defensively this season (only four clean sheets in all competitions), especially when the games get stretched: having lost Kim and his outstanding ability at anticipating passes towards the attackers and peace has proven very costly.
Juventus vs Napoli Tip 3: is Oshimen back at his best?
Despite all their woes, Napoli have been more prolific than Juve so far (26 goals scored against 22); they are second in the away table and have only lost one of their last 21 games (2-0 to Monza, when they had already wrapped up the Scudetto) on the road in Serie A.
In 2023, Napoli were a world apart from Juventus, who they trashed 5-1 at the Maradona (at that time, the Bianconeri were coming on the back of eight consecutive clean sheets) and beat 1-0 in Turin on their way to winning the title.
Considering that the two starting XIs are basically unchanged from 2022/2023, it might not be impossible for the visitors to repeat their previous success. Last year’s top goalscorer, Victor Oshimen, tormented Juve’s backline in January when he scored a brace.
The Nigerian has not netted since early October. He was out for six weeks due to an injury, and against Inter, it appeared he was still not at his peak.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s numbers are also down compared to last season (he has only scored once in Napoli’s last eight games), and on Friday, Mazzarri needs a big performance from his two best players if he wants to unlock a solid defence (nine goals conceded and eight clean sheets) like Allegri’s one.
Ultimately, it will be down to details and mentality, and Juventus normally know how to manage the tight margins.
Four of their five games against top six sides have seen less than 2.5 goals scored, and three of them (against Atalanta, AC Milan and Inter) have been draws after 45 minutes.

Juventus vs Napoli Team News: the skipper is back to lead the hosts
Brazilian international Danilo will start for Juventus for the first time since October 7th as he’s fully recovered from a muscular injury. This will be the only change to the formation that defeated Monza last Friday, with Nicolussi-Caviglia set to start his third consecutive match in midfield as Manuel Locatelli is still doubtful. Timothy Weah might make the bench, whereas De Sciglio is expected back no earlier than late December.
For the visitors, Zielinkski, who was on the bench against Inter, is looking to regain his place at the expense of Elmas. With both left-backs (Mario Rui and Oliveira) injured, Natan will probably continue to play in that position, although Juan Jesus and Zanoli are also in contention. Politano, Kvaratskhelia and Oshimen will lead the line.
