Inter Milan vs AC Milan Bet Builder Tips: A tactical battle between two of Italy’s finest managers
Both Teams to Score – Yes
The fifth (!) Milan derby of 2023 is a top-of-the-table affair between two teams who have enjoyed the best start in Serie A. Different in their tactical approach but similar in the array of attacking options, Inter Milan and AC Milan have both scored eight goals and created plenty of chances in their first three games.
Both clubs look revolutionised compared to the teams that played in last season’s Champions League semi-final.
AC Milan used the sale of Sandro Tonali to buy players of talent and experience, such as Christian Pulisic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who were desperate for a chance in a top club. So far, the two former Chelsea men have taken Serie A by storm, helping the Rossoneri to look more dynamic and unpredictable.
Should AC Milan have also reinforced their defence in the summer? Will find out on Saturday, as Inter Milan (who have themselves signed 12 new players) will try to impose their rhythm from the start and use the switches of play to their wingbacks to inflict pain on their city rivals as they did in the first 20 minutes of their, first, victorious Champions League semi-final.
AC Milan will be without Fykaio Tomori, who got sent off in Rome, while for Inter Milan, Stefan de Vri might keep his place at the centre of the defence despite the return to fitness of Francesco Acerbi.
Hakan Calhanoglu Over 0.5 Shots on Target
The hosts have kept three clean sheets so far, and in fairness, their new goalkeeper, Yann Sommer, has been a spectator. AC Milan will target Inter Milan’s right-hand side, with Rafael Leao taking on Matteo Darmian and Denzel Dumfries and left-back Theo Hernandez coming inside the pitch to create a numerical advantage.
For Inter Milan, the work of Hakan Calhanoglu, with and without the ball, will be key. The Turkish international, successfully reinvented as a holding midfielder by Simone Inzaghi, will be tasked with protecting his defence from the runs of AC Milan midfielders and dictating the tempo of his side’s attacks.
Calhanoglu’s range of action is vast: he doesn’t get into the opposition box many times, like when he was playing for AC Milan, but he’s often found in good shooting positions.
If Inter Milan is able to move the ball well and pin AC Milan inside their box, he’ll have the opportunity to unleash his right foot, as he did back in April when he hit the post in the first Champions League derby.
With Inter Milan, he averages 2.17 shots and 0.56 shots on target per game, and he’s also the designated penalty taker (he scored one against AC Milan in November 2021).
Over 8.5 Corners
Last year’s successful European campaign confirmed that both teams have developed their style of play to match the continent’s top sides.
The derbies della Madonnina of the 90s, when Serie A was at its best, were often cagey affairs, with both sides more concerned not to leave themselves exposed. Between 1990 and 1996, 11 derbies featured two goals or less: six matches finished 1-1 and four 1-0.
But nowadays, both Inter Milan and AC Milan have adopted a more ‘European’ and proactive style as they try to win big matches by sticking to their principles rather than profiting from the opposition’s mistakes.
This derby comes very early in the season, so it’s not yet a title decider. With that in mind, I expect a very open game, played at a great peace and with plenty of chances.
So far this season, Inter Milan have taken an average of 5.3 corners per game, and AC Milan 4.33.
There were eight corners or more in two of last year’s five derbies. On another occasion, seven, and in the other two matches, five and six, respectively.
