Hull vs Norwich Tip 1: Tigers to bare their teeth
England, Championship, Saturday, January 12th, 20:00 (UK)
Hull City have underlined their intentions to be part of the race for a Championship playoff place with the loan signing of Liverpool’s Fabio Carvalho. The move came less than a month after he started a Champions League match for RB Leipzig.
It is something of a coup for the Tigers with the 21-year-old who cost the Reds £7m from Fulham last season, linked with several Premier League and parachute payment Championship clubs. In a sign of how upwardly mobile owner Acun Ilicali has the club, it is expected to be the first of a series of high-profile young talent heading to the MKM Stadium.
Liam Rosenior has built a strong reputation as a progressive coach who is good at developing talent whilst getting his side to play an attractive brand of expansive, attacking football. A win here will lift them back into the top six, and I take them to do just that.
Although in the midst of a shaky spell of form, which has seen them lose five of their last eight league games, the East Yorkshire outfit remains a solid prospect on home soil. Five wins from their last seven home Championship fixtures is a decent return and will be too much for a Norwich side that are particularly weak on the road.
Wagner remains
Despite the arrival of new Sporting Director Ben Knapper, David Wagner has somehow remained in situ at Carrow Road despite knocking around as favourite and second favourite on our Next Championship Manager to be Sacked article. He has led his side to just seven wins from the last 24 fixtures across all competitions, losing 12.
Since taking over from Dean Smith a year ago, the former Huddersfield boss has gone from one streak to another. Beginning his reign with six wins from the opening nine games before recording just one win in the last 11 fixtures of the season. This campaign started with five wins from an undefeated first six outings, followed by a sequence of eight defeats in 10 before an upturn that saw only one loss from the next eight matches.
It looks set for another downswing, with only one victory from the last six attempts. Most recently, a turgid home draw in the FA Cup to League One Bristol Rovers, who can count themselves unlucky not to already be planning their away trip to Anfield in the next round.
The Canaries have recorded just two wins against sides currently in the top 10, both courtesy of goals deep into added-on time, and picked up two points from a possible 18 from games versus the teams in the top six. The last of which was an embarrassing bus parking point at home to Southampton. A game which saw Wagner set his side up with a five-man defence, have just 25% of the ball and concede an xG of 2.50 whilst posting only 0.80 of their own.
The Norfolk side’s record of eight defeats from their last 12 road trips tells its own story and includes a defeat to rock-bottom Rotherham and a 6-2 mauling at newly promoted Plymouth. Norwich are regularly out-coached and out-thought, and with the respective men in each dugout, that is sure to continue on Friday night.

Hull vs Norwich Tip 2: Canaries defence in a flap but the Sainz are good at the other end
Goals should be on the menu at the MKM Stadium in a match that promises entertainment for those opting for a Friday night at home in front of the TV. There have been 17 goals across Hull’s last five home league games, with four of those seeing at least three goals.
The Tigers have only failed to score twice on home soil this term from 15 games across all competitions, and when things click, they are a joy to watch. Their last three wins in front of their own fans have seen them hit the back of the net three times against Blackburn and Cardiff, going one better for the visit of Rotherham.
Talking of the Millers, they are the only side to have conceded more than Norwich’s 28 goals away from home this season. There has been more than a fair share of individual error to contribute towards that, but also an ever-changing defensive roll call.
Grant Hanley and Danny Batth were partnered together against Bristol Rovers on Saturday – the 14th different centre-back pairing to start in Wagner’s 51 competitive games in charge. Expect another change to personnel on Friday, and the vibrant Tigers attack to take advantage.
At the other end, only Middlesbrough and runaway leaders Leicester have scored more goals on their travels than the Canaries 23. Josh Sargent is now back fit, having missed a large part of the season through injury, and has scored four goals in just 310 minutes of league action this term.
I also have to mention Borja Sainz, who has been a rare bright spark in a bleak midwinter for Norwich. The Summer signing from Turkish side Giresunspor had a delayed introduction to the side after injuring ankle ligaments in pre-season.
Although not a selection to put in this bet builder, it certainly is worth mentioning his price to score outside the box looks too big at 41.00 with bet365. If, as expected, the visitors choose to play on the break, look out for the 22-year-old’s pace and desire to drive at opposition defences. He also likes to take on a shot, firing in 17 attempts in 500 minutes of league action so far, scoring twice. The first of which came from outside the area in the 3-1 defeat of Sheffield Wednesday.
Norwich have kept just one clean sheet away from home and only failed to score twice, so this leg of the builder is for over 2.5 goals and both teams to score.

Hull vs Norwich Tip 3: Jon Rowe to have a go – and hit the target
One player I omitted earlier from Norwich’s attacking threat was their breakout performer of the season so far, Jon Rowe. That is because he is the player involved in the third and final leg of this bet builder.
The 20-year-old seems to be undervalued to score here despite already being in double figures for the season. There are an incredible 14 players ahead of him in the goalscoring market, eight of whom are his teammates.
We don’t have to be so bold as to take him to add to his impressive goals tally with the price linked to similar markets. In this case, the odds are 2.00 to simply have a shot on target.
Hull has conceded, on average, 13.5 shots per game this campaign, which is the seventh highest in the Championship. That means the England U21 international should get a chance or two to pull the trigger.
He has hit the target 16 times in his 22 starts for his club, and although he has drawn a blank in his last two, they were tough assignments at West Brom and the defensive display against Southampton. Rowe does seem to be at his best in the more high-profile fixtures, scoring both his side’s goals in the recent East Anglian derby.
That was his last appearance in a live TV game, so this looks a perfect opportunity to impress his many admirers with another strong performance. He will also have fond memories of the reverse fixture on the opening weekend of the season. A game in which he scored his first senior goal.
- Hull City vs Norwich City Tip 3: Jon Rowe Over 0.5 Shots on Target (TRACKED BET)
- Best Odds: 2.10
- Bookmaker: bet365
- Stake: 10/10

Hull City vs Norwich City Team News Preview: Exciting new addition the key team news
Already without the impressive Jaden Philogene to a knee injury, Hull suffered a massive setback last week with the news another loan star, Liam Delap, will miss several games due to a knee injury. This news could thrust veteran new signing Billy Sharp into contention for a start.
Cyrus Christie will also be absent after injuring his hamstring in training last week, joining the likes of Jean Michael Seri and Adama Traore in the treatment room. The bleak fitness report is being tempered by news that marquee signing Fabio Carvalho should be joining the Tigers on loan from Liverpool ahead of this clash.
For Norwich, the news is good. For the first time this season, David Wagner has a fully fit squad to choose from. Captain Grant Hanley has made a return to the starting lineup following eight months out with an Achilles injury. The Scottish international is expected to recover from a back niggle which forced him off in the closing stages of Saturday’s FA Cup tie.
Josh Sargent made his first start in over four months in the same game, with his planned withdrawal at half-time allaying fears of a recurrence of the ankle ligament injury that had sidelined him.
The Predicted Championship League Table
BETSiE, our in-house predictive model, predicts that this will be a 7th vs 12th match-up by the time we get to May. She has Hull City only just missing out on playoff football by less than three points, making it a rather excruciating end to the season. However, considering their bottom-half finish last term, it’s certainly a step in the right direction. Liam Rosenior is building something special at Hull City, and a seventh-placed finish would be a sign of exactly that.
Norwich finishing in 12th isn’t good enough for that football club. Not at this level. If David Wagner remains for the season and they flutter around mid-table/a bottom-half-finish, don’t be surprised to see the German head honcho packing his bags before the summer transfer window opens.

A Snapshot of Liam Rosenior’s Hull City
The 2022/23 season started with mixed results for Rosenior and Hull City. The team showed moments of brilliance, particularly in their attacking play, but also struggled with consistency. Rosenior’s approach was praised for its boldness and attacking intent, but there were concerns about defensive vulnerabilities. Despite these challenges, Hull City remained competitive in the Championship, hovering around mid-table for most of the season.
Rosenior’s commitment to an attractive style of play earned him respect from Hull City supporters, who appreciated the positive changes he brought to the team’s playing style. His ability to develop young players was also notable, with several academy graduates becoming regular starters borne from work on the training pitch.
Hull’s head coach continues to build and shape the team. Hull City is seen as a work in progress, with Rosenior at the helm working towards creating a team that can not only compete in the Championship but also aim for higher achievements in the future. His journey at Hull City is in its infancy, with expectations of further growth and success under his leadership.
Hull City’s fans couldn’t be happier with their man at the helm, which, in this division, is, oddly, an unnerving position to be in. Suppose your manager ticks all the right boxes, conducts himself seamlessly in front of the media, and has their team playing good football and progressing up the table. In that case, it’s only a matter of time until the bigger boys begin to circle – just ask Plymouth Argyle supporters.
Hull City vs Norwich City Stats Preview: Should we expect a Barnes-storming Norwich performance
- In their title winning campaigns of 2018/19 and 2020/21 Norwich lost a combined 6 away games in the Championship – they have already lost 7 league games on the road this term.
- When Ashley Barnes has started for Norwich they average 1.8 pts per game – when he hasn’t started they have won just twice picking up an average of 0.7 pts per game.
- Over 2.5 goals and both teams to score has landed in each of the last four meetings between these two sides – with the hosts winning on each occasion.
- Hull City is the only team in the EFL which hasn’t got a single letter that you can colour in.
