The international break is a time rife with transfer rumours and Manchester United are in the midst of all of it.
The Red Devils have been plagued by injuries and January recruitments could help them make something out of what has been a lukewarm season so far.
Erik ten Hag’s side has been linked to a number of French internationals including Antoine Griezmann, Yousuff Fofana and more. To discuss these targets, we got in touch with former Manchester United and France defender, Mikael Silvestre.

Moving For Antoine Griezmann Doesn’t Make Sense
Antoine Griezmann’s name being linked to Manchester United came as a surprise and Silvestre doesn’t think the move makes sense.
That opinion is not because of Griezmann’s age but more to do with his position. In Silvestre’s view, Griezmann would be occupying the same position as Bruno Fernandes or Christian Eriksen.
“It’s never too late for a player to make a big move, but I think Antoine Griezmann would be a second Bruno Fernandes or Eriksen, as Griezmann doesn´t play as a forward anymore.”
“He has been playing more deep recently, so it doesn’t make any sense for Man United to add him to the squad.”
“Man United has enough quality in that position, so this wouldn’t be the first move they would make. I don´t think such a move would make sense.”
Youssouf Fofana Ticks The Boxes Required Of A Defensive Midfielder
A move that the former French international is in favour of is bringing Youssouf Fofana from Monaco to Old Trafford.
Silvestre says that Fofana could have been brought in the summer but United decided to go for Sofyan Amrabat instead. He, however, can see Fofana moving to United in January as he ticks all the boxes required of a defensive midfielder in the Premier League.
“Every club could have moved for Youssouf Fofana early in the summer. I know he was available as he has two years left on his contract.”
“He could have been a potential midfielder for Man Utd then. He has a bit more physical presence than Fred had for instance, but the club decided to sign Amrabat instead of Fofana. We know it was a reaction to the early start of the season.”
“Fofana is ticking a lot of boxes to play as a defensive midfielder for a Premier League team and Man United could definitely be his next move, for sure.”
INEOS Should Explore Getting Todibo And Thuram From Nice
With Sir Jim Ratcliffe now owning 25 percent of Manchester United and having a big say in sporting matters, speculation is rife that the Red Devils could recruit from OGC Nice, the other football club owned by Ratcliffe and INEOS.
Two players at Nice who have been linked to Manchester United in the past are Jean-Clair Todibo and Khephren Thuram. Silvestre believes that both players have the quality to play for Manchester United and in such a situation, the club will have access to complete scouting reports as well.
“Thuram and Todibo definitely have the level to play for Man Utd. And I’m sure they’re on the radar and they will be scrutinised.”
“They will probably be put forward because it will be an easy and sensible transition and will make sense for INEOS to get the best scouting reports on these two players specifically.”
Silvestre adds that both players are French internationals and praised Todibo in particular for the season he’s having.
“They’re quality players. Both French internationals.”
“Todibo is having a very good season. Khephren Thuram, a little bit less this season compared to last but still a quality midfielder.”
