Prediction: Frosinone 1-1 Udinese

Whoever loses on Sunday will probably play in Serie B next season, although if Empoli fails to beat Roma the home side will be saved regardless of their result. 

A relegation play-out, which we already witnessed last season in Italy’s top flight, is also a possibility. Permutations, permutations, who doesn’t love them at this time of year?

Frosinone vs Udinese Prediction 1: Too good to go down?

Last Sunday, a stoppage-time penalty kick restored Udinese’s hopes of avoiding their first relegation in 31 years. 

Lazar Samardzic’s goal against Empoli, the latest ever scored in Serie A since 2004/2005, has helped the Friulani ahead of the last game of the season whilst one point above the relegation zone. 

It was Udinese’s 19th draw of the season, a record in Europe’s top five leagues (the runners-up are Mallorca with 15 draws), but most importantly the fourth consecutive game unbeaten for Fabio Cannavaro. 

The former Italy’s World Champions has managed, in a very short period of time, to make his players react to a situation that looked desperate. 

All season long Udinese have been considered ‘too good to go down’ and the team has really struggled to hang on to leads in tight situations. 

Now, with 90 minutes to go, they have destiny in their own hands but will have to face the toughest possible opponent in a potential winner-takes-it-all scenario.

In fact, Frosinone can play for two out of three results: a draw would see them saved, even if Empoli win against Roma.

Frosinone vs Udinese Prediction 2: with Fabio, they ‘Can’

After having spent the vast majority of the season outside of the bottom three, the hosts would not want to depend on the result at the ‘Stadio Castellani’. 

Frosinone has Serie A’s 10th-best attack, with 44 goals scored (only four less than Lazio), but thanks to their recent defensive solidity, they’re inching closer to achieving a historical salvation. 

In fact, the newly-promoted Ciociari, who have never survived more than a season in Italy’s top flight, have kept five clean sheets in their last seven games and have been defeated only once (5-0 by Inter at home) in the last eight matches. 

On paper, Udinese remain the stronger side, but Frosinone’s home form has been excellent. 

Eusebio Di Francesco’s men have collected 25 points (one more than Monza and Napoli) and have failed to score only four times at the ‘Benito Stirpe’. 

Udinese have only lost two of their last seven games on the road, finding the back of the net on five occasions, including against Juventus, Lazio and Bologna. 

Hiring the inexperienced Cannavaro seemed like a risk, but the Friulani will probably achieve salvation by the skin of their teeth.

Frosinone vs Udinese Prediction 3: depending on the Giallorossi

Most importantly, this Sunday, Empoli must win against Roma. 

The Tuscan side has only won two of their last 11 games, but Roma have nothing to play for, as last weekend’s win against Genoa guaranteed the Giallorossi a sixth-place finish.

If Empoli takes the lead early, this game at the ‘Benito Stirpe’ would probably become highly entertaining, with plenty of chances on both sides. 

Twenty four out of Frosinone’s 37 games (65%) have ended with both teams on the scoresheet and 22 Udinese’s games (59%) have produced the same outcome. 

However all the last four visitors’ games have produced less than three goals whereas Frosinone have been involved in three scoreless draws since March. 

But, if they have to chase a result, any of these two sides would probably regress to the mean and goals are to be expected. 

Walid Cheddira, who has scored three goals in the last nine, and Lazar Samardzic, who has scored back-to-back goals, are the most in-form players in each camp. 

The Moroccan is the man who has had more shots on target for Frosinone (28 in total), and the young Serbian is second only to Lorenzo Lucca for attempts and has had at least one shot in all of Udinese’s last five games.

Frosinone vs Udinese Team News and Possible Lineups: Mazzitelli is a doubt, Pereyra might return

For Frosinone, Mazzitelli and Bonifazi are not at their best and should start on the bench. Brescianini and Barrenechea will play in the middle, with Valeri and Zortea deployed on the flanks. 

In attack, Soulè and Harroui will support Cheddira. The defense trio will be made up of Romagnoli, Lirola and Okoli. 

Fabio Cannavaro might use Pereyra from the first minute to support Lucca up front, but Davis is also in contention for a start. 

Success is injured, but Thauvin might be fit to make the bench. Kamara and Ehizibue will play on the wings, with the latter favored over Ebosele. Walace will be the playmaker with Samardzic and Payero at his sides. Silvestri, Lovric and Deulofeu are also unavailable.
