It’s now ten in a row without a win for the visitors, but that doesn’t mean they won’t trouble Flamengo’s back line.

Flamengo remain in the running for the Serie A title but can’t afford too many slip ups along the way with both Botafogo and Palmeiras strong contenders. Tite has largely got a tune out of his side, especially compared to last season’s display, but they are often leaving it late to win matches.

However, one could argue that is a sign of champions, and there’s been a few matches this campaign where they’ve left it late to seal the three points. That happened in round one against Atletico GO. After falling behind, they came back to win 2-1 thanks to Pedro’s stoppage time penalty – more on him later, just for a change.

With their stars back from Copa America and settled back in, this is the type of game Flamengo need to win convincingly if they are to end the year with the title.

Atletico GO have fallen off a cliff in recent weeks. Before their midweek game against Bahia, they had lost five in a row, and are winless in their last nine. A trip to the Maracana isn’t what they need right now, and the hosts should wrap up the three points in style.

Flamengo vs Atletico GO Prediction 2: Visitors to score

Although the odds suggest this will be a procession for the hosts, let’s just hold your horses right there. Yes, Atletico GO have been poor and sit bottom of the table, but they’ve only failed to score in two of their last ten matches.

Let’s not forget, they scored against Flamengo in the opening round. Although that feels like a lifetime ago, it offers hope, and shows they are capable of scoring against the best in the league.

In fact, they have scored against Atletico Mineiro, Bragantino, Fortaleza and Palmeiras on their travels. They don’t go hiding against the big guns.

What is also interesting is the fact Fla have kept just one clean sheet in their last ten matches – which came across Fluminense who couldn’t buy a point a few weeks back under Fernando Diniz.

Having shipped in ten goals at the Maracana in nine matches, this will be the reason they don’t win the title. Back the visitors to score once more.

Flamengo vs Atletico GO Prediction 3: Rinse and repeat

I would apologise for posting this tip relentlessly when Flamengo play, but if it continues to keep winning, it feels stupid to abandon the strategy.

Pedro is Fla’s goal machine. Leading the golden boot charge with nine goals, and responsible for penalties, the 27-year-old is the ultimate “fox in the box” and he’ll no doubt sniff out any opportunities against Atletico GO.

Prior to the midweek trip to Vitoria, Pedro had scored in three consecutive matches. In fact, he’s scored in six of his last seven matches – both home and away.

With so much quality in and around him, they can either find the striker inside the box, or are clever enough to win penalties – and Pedro has only missed one this season – yet still scored in that match anyway.

His price is seemingly getting shorter, but for those who follow my columns, if he’s evens or above against a low level team at home, you back him to find the back of the net.
