Gillingham vs Sheffield United: Gills Goals
England, FA Cup, Saturday, January 6th, 15:00 (UK)
Six points adrift at the foot of the top flight, I doubt Sheffield United’s fixture with League Two side Gillingham will be a priority of Chris Wilder’s.
The Blades boss certainly does not have the best track record in this competition. In his previous stint in S2, Wilder’s United side failed to make it past the first round of the FA Cup or EFL Cup in three of their eight games.
In one season, Sheff Utd were knocked out in the third round by Non-League Barnet, another close shave saw them edge past fellow Non-Leaguers Fylde. So, the Blades certainly have a bad pedigree at this stage under their current manager.
This fixture comes in between a 21 day break from domestic duty for Sheff Utd and this is the main issue from a punting perspective because I am unsure exactly how Wilder will approach it. A chance to implement some of the things his side have been working on at the training ground or a bit of a burden?
Gillingham have won their last two on the spin but given the Sheff Utd uncertainty, I do not want to get the hosts on side. Instead, both teams to score appeals at odds against.
- Predictions: Both Teams to Score

Watford vs Chesterfield: High-flying Spireites
England, FA Cup, Saturday, January 6th, 15:00 (UK)
Chesterfield will head to the big smoke in a buoyant mood.
They have a seven point lead at the top of the National League, a two game cushion and a spot in the FA Cup 3rd round. Crucially though, despite interest from Plymouth their manager recently swore allegiance to the Spireites.
Paul Cook’s side scored three goals in six minutes to come two goals down to win 3-2 to beat Solihull Moors on News Years Day meaning they have only lost thrice all season, winning 82.1% of their 28 games in all competitions.
Their two victories in this competition both came at home , 1-0’s against League One sides Portsmouth and Leyton Orient. A trip to Vicarage Road, to face Championship opponents is a different proposition entirely.
Cook said post match on Monday; “I want a good advert for the league” and his side are certainly holding up their end of the bargain. They top the charts for goals scored (61) and are conceding 1.32 per game. Both teams have scored in 67.9% of their games this term and 11 have seen five goals or more.
I am not sure Chesterfield have enough to get a result at Watford but they certainly have enough to bloody the nose of Valerien Ismael’s side. Both teams to score is the bet again here.

Wigan vs Manchester United: Up the Tics
England, FA Cup, Monday, January 8th, 20:15: (UK)
There is a clip from Manchester United’s latest defeat at the City Ground where the camera pans over the Nottingham Forest huddle and picks up Morgan Gibbs-White saying “look at their faces, they don’t want to be here.” Then focus switches to the very disinterested face of Christian Erikson.
It’s pure perfection.
I am sure most have seen the clip on social media but it perfectly encapsulates what is going wrong at Man Utd. You would imagine a trip to Wigan on a Monday night is even less desirable for this Red Devils squad and for that reason, getting the hosts on side in some capacity interests me here.
Wigan are in the bottom half of League One, as literal of a false position as you will ever see.
Without their points deduction, they would be in 9th, eight points off the play off places. Shaun Maloney’s side have only won one of their last six but have faced Barnsley and Derby over that period.
The Latics certainly have history in this competition beating Man Utd’s rivals City to lift the trophy in 2013. Their current supremo was amongst the XI that day.
Backing Wigan with a +1.5, +2.0 Asian Handicap is the bet here.
- Predictions: Wigan Asian Handicap (+1.5, 2.0)
